Not including drag racing which I still do once & awhile...

AFM #54
AFM #491

Raced something like 150+ racedays, 450+ races, lost count.

AFM career spanned 1977'-1984' - AMA Qualified in mid-1979' (by # of top three finishes)

Numerous top two in multi-season championships, only a couple wins. Lost count of second place finishes @ about 28, trophies now gathering dust in attic...

Raced bikes in: Stock Production, Modified Production, Open Grand Prix, Formula II, Golden Gate Challenge, etc.

Raced 77' KZ650 (4.5 seasons)
Raced 81' KZ1000J (1.0 season)
Raced 83' GPz1100 (2.5 seasons)

Big crash in Golden Gate Challenge (now Formula Pacific) in 3A ended career cuz I was making payments on race bike (don't do that!)

Crew Chief/pitman on AFM # 869 Open GP GS1000 SB f/87' season. Got 2nd place for Season Championship w/rider Jeff Banister.

AFM #447
CCS #47

This was my second year. I usually race all the AMF and CCS events and Sears Point and Thunderhill I have time for.

I am done until I get a new race bike, and I do it right. I expect I will be back on the grid mid season (at the latest) next year.

I am also in grad school, so when that is done any job I get that increases my income will go directly to racing.

I have racing blood. I raced go carts as a little kid, and my brother now races off road cars.

In the flesh, so to speak ... I was also Rider Rep for a season or two.

I think we've met a time or two, but I'm not positive. For all the stuff I did for CityBike, I never actually went into the office ... never met Brian in person, I think I met J ... hmm, can't remember her name now. Wish I'd stuck with it, but I got burnt out and just couldn't do anything of any quality anymore.

Since you're counting, I'll chime in here as well.

Spent the summer of '83 racing with a club in Phoenix. No nat'l affiliations or stuff like that...just join the club, show up, pass tech (such as it was) and race.

Used Phoenix Int'l Raceway and ran it backwards! Main straight and the banked turns 3 & 4 plus the infield road. Track surface was extremely abrasive back then and tires were burnt toast in 100 miles. "Box stock" class with a 83 Honda Interceptor (God I loved that bike).

Second place trophies all summer. Never could touch the guy who always won, but I sure had fun. Quickly taught me that regardless of how fast I thought I went on the street, it was nothing compared to the speed generated on a real track under racing conditions.

Thanks for bringing back the great memories. For me these days, that's as close as I get to a track.

Harold...

No doubt..........

I think it was that mentality that started the thread talking about it only takes money to be fast.

I know one thing I have never experienced on the street, and that is the g-forces from the tank slamming into me as slow down. Nor have I ever experience on the street the feeling of my arms falling off from being so tired from racing all day and using all my strength to manhandle the bike through hard turning and braking.

Nor I have ever experienced brake fade on the street.

And I think only on the track is where I could have crashed at a pretty good pace, tumble like a zillion times, get up, and walk back to the pits.

Just beginning to figure this forum business out... Budman requested a racer check-in, which I just notice in the private messages section...so here's it is....

David Glenn
AFM #721
2000 R6 running in 600 Production and 600 Superbike

Novice season this year.
Two prior on-track experiences, one with Code's Calif Superbike School, and the other with Spencer's School (much much better shcool, IMHO), both last year in preparation for racing this season.

Top novice in 600 Superbike the first weekend, then downhill from there.... sorta. Lap times got better by far. In the first 4 race weekends, completed 8 of 8 races. But the second half of the season started with a crash at Buttonwillow, which severely damaged the bike. Repairs forced the missing of the next race, then the last 2 weekends ended with a crash each time. No personal injuries, but crashing sucks, and it's expensive.

Been pitting with Berto since the second race. Teaming up makes a huge difference, and a lot more fun.

Anyway, that's me and I'm eagerly anticipating season. :teeth

I am a racer and new to this forum.I started racing with AFM in 98.I only did a few races this season, took a little time off to get a new bike(GSXR 10hundo)even though it is my streetbike,I got the idea to do the AFM 4hr on it.It was kind of a last minute deal,Gary Jaehne helped me put the whole package together THANKS Gary!
I am trying to pick up a 01 750,so I don't have to change the 1k back and forth from street to race in order to get to work.I must say that the bike and the team did really well, for a bunch of "old guys"I am planning to race the 1k next year, but am still undecided as to go open prod,or keep running open GP.I still have my trusty YZFZR 7/1000,but it is a little tired.I did a little tuning for Ed Milhausen this season, and when he was'nt taken out,or fell down,he did ok.We only had a few transmission issues, but the junkyard engine we got was a good one.If any of you have a question, and I can answer it,I will.....Robbie:cool

I think I am in the same boat as Superhawk2000. Paid registration, took the class part of the AFM school. Mounted up my 96 GSX-R 750 and proceeded to spit and sputter around the track with carburetor problems. Could not take my rider test. I believe it was Thanksgiving or some other holiday of 98 and it was windy as hell. Let my friend Jessie Broadway take the bike and I was going to come back but never did. We were going to share a ride and do different classes throughout the season. Track schools are about all I make time for now.

Super Motard racer here.... My first experience on the track was good and bad. I was comfortable and fast until I got a little overzealous and highsided resulting in a broken ankle. That was aug 25 of this year and I'm home now from motard race #2. I was not comfortable with my bike today until the last race. It felt squirmy all over I'm sure I wasn't the same today . Without riding for two months waiting for my ankle to heel and then jumping into a racing situation I know wasn't the smartest thing to do.I was slow compared to alot of other racers. I managed to keep my bike up all day but with a few pucker factors( damn front tire stick STICK) I raced but not at full pace. I chocked every start to hang back from the field and when fast guys would come up on me I would let them by. I wanted to get back on the horse today. I feel I did, also I learned and played with suspension and tire pressures and was able to feel the difference and know I was going the right direction. I look foward to the winter dirt riding season to get practice on slipery surfaces. The new year is almost upon us and I will be there on the grid next year being a better rider.

Am I a racer?

Moved to Cali in 84 to try road racing since there was not much of a scene in PA.
Joined the AFM & campainged a 82 GPZ 550 #681, switched to a 500 Interceptor & a SR500 for 85, like everyone I got a GSXR 750 in 86 & ran that along side the SR & Interceptor.
In 87 I drop kicked the Interceptor & added a GSXR 1100. Started traveling outside california for races @ Portland, Phoniex, & Steamboat.
In 88 I sold everything & bought new GSXRs (750 & 1100) & a 600 Katana. Did every AFM event & approx 10-12 other races.
89 to 91 I rode a few AFM races, but concentrated on the GSXR series.
End of 91 I sold everything, got married & got back into dirt bikes.

I still do the occasional track day on either a RVF 400 or R6 & have to agree, the new stuff is so good.

In 88 I got som help from Metzeler, their top tire was still the CompK & then the bias ME1. Makes my collar bones ache just thinking about them :laughing

AFM #303 (was #304 first season)

Started in 93 (I think, might have been 92 - sucks getting older) with a HawkGT in 650 twins. Just before(?) the SV650 came out sold it and got a Superhawk because I didn't want to throw money into the engine. Haven't had much time the last coupla years but hope to get back to it soon.

HAGA is my hero!!

I started racing August 2001 but did track days on a monthly basis since 1998. On one of those track days, I ran into one of a current BARF member by the name of Mike "Mr. Crash" Solis and had a nice dicing with him. He later came to my pit area and told me that I should go racing but I didn't think I wasn't fast enough and I had a old 93 ZX7 back then. I later got a chance to ride the R6 and decide this bike is the most fun and easiest to ride. I started racing the year after.

Special Thanks to Mike Solis for inspiring me to race!!

played around on my '73 kawa h2 (i still own it) during weekly races at sears point and baylands.
reset track mph mark at sears point 4 times in 1989. held the fastest mph mark at baylands until the very last race in '88
quickest e.t at sears point @7.78 and sacramento @ 7.69 in '92
survived the highest mph crash at sacto (record still stands, lol)
3rd in weekly sport drags points in '95 (on '79 cbx 1183 with mr turbo kit best @ 10:41 @ 132)
ran a few ama prostar events over the years then discovered that injuries and children were going to end 'career' so decided to give up racing and shoot for a job @ sears point. been there since '94 ..

Currently AFM #751, was CCS #751 but I haven't raced CCS since 2002.

I started out on an EX250 but got an FZR400 in 2000 and that put an end to racing 250s.

I was the team captain of Jim Race's two endurance teams:

The Feminine Fluffs of Women
The She-Devils on Wheels (3rd in 450 class in 2002)

and this year:

The Leather Clad Warriors (3rd again in 450 in 2003)

Unlike Jim, I am a girl. Also, unlike Jim my lipstick is always the right shade for my complexion.

I taught Will Sitch how to fur a FZR. Both of mine are furry.

Sorry ladies & gentlemen, should've check in 1st. I became a BARF member in Oct. 2003.
I will be starting my 4th year roadracing in AFM and my 1st year running 3-4 Nationals in AMA.
Matthew Weathers AFM #266. Havn't gotten my AMA # but I have more that enough points and will let you know that # as soon as I get it.
The 2003 AFM season went much better than 2001 & 2002. I finished 6th overall in 600 production & 11th overall in 600 superbike. I'm happy with how I finished but not at all satisfied. I will start winning. I am so dedicated to our sport and have a deep passion for what we do. Competing is food for my soul, it's an expression, our lifestyle.
We are privileged to have this site, I think its great. So much info. can be shared. Wish I would've joined long ago.

I has been a racer for a long time. Sustained only minor injuries. Still do it (race) on occasion. Must be in the "old school" class as I dont care what I am on (bike), what I look like doing it (racing), the helmets have worn down my noggin', my sliders are stuck to my leathers with "Goop", my first track day was the "California Superbike School" in 1985 @ Laguna Seca (before the track change)on a GPZ 550, Etc.... I could go on. Altogether I have'nt accomplished anything except to make all the daily Bull somewhat more bearable. Cheers!:burnout
