Ok, if you look at the left side of the tire like it was rolling forward you'll see an oblong indention with a four digit number in it. Tell what that number is.

The last four digits of the DOT number. 1003 = 10th week of 2003

No recall that I know of, you just don't want to buy a tire that is old, it looses it's stiction over time even just sitting in the garage.

so is the tire considered old?

I guess it depends on what you want to do with it. If you're going racing or doing trackdays in my opinion it is. I just purchased a set of Diablo Corsa's from Cycle Gear and the dating is 3904 or the 39th week of 04 where your tire was manufactured a whole year prior.
Of course this is just my opinion, the $25 savings for a tire that's a year and a half old may be enough of a savings or it may not, depending on what you do with the tire. For me though, if I'm on a track racing around and pushing it I want to have complete confidence in my tires. Not having confidence in your tires makes you hold back and in my opinion again, that loss of confidence is not worth the $25 savings.
I'm no tire expert so if anyone else has an educated opinion on this let us know what you think.
