For the ppl who run MS XP. There is a start up window where you choose a user sign into the computer. Well, I can sign in but it immediately signs me off. I would run anti-virus but I have to sign in to do that. Do I have to reformat? There is alot of info I haven't backed up.

are you getting any error messages just prior to being signed off?
If connected to the internet, via DSL or Cable modem, disconnect that.
Try starting in Safe Mode and looking in the 'start up' folder for weird progams. I am not sure if you can run anti-virus in safe mode, but try.

Start up in "Safe Mode." You should be able to run your antivirus there.

Did anything happen previous to your last shut down that was OK like a lock up or power outage or surge? Did you add any new programs? Upgrade your video driver?

Is it a sign-off (back to the user login screen) or a shutdown?

if the latter, you may be carrying the Blaster worm. To keep it from nailing you, AS SOON as you get logged in, go to Run and type:

SHUTDOWN /A

This will abort the auto-shutdown that Blaster throws in the startup sequence. Then you'll be able to download the patch from MS, along with updated defs for your AV software.

Try this, It worked for me,
The problem I have seen on a few PC's I have repaired is when I log on it would immediately log me off..

Logging ON logs you off after Using Adaware - Fix:
Boot your computer from your Windows XP restore cd/OS cd, when the menu comes up hit the R key to get to the recovery prompt.

The prompt should start off at C:\Windows.
Type cd system32
The prompt should now read C:\Windows\system32
Type: copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
Reboot

This solves the corrupted User profile problem that allows you to log on :) More Info Here... (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20972739.html)

Ok thanks for the advice. I do not get any error message at all. I have tried running safe mode but does the same thing. I think DeaconBlues is the closest to the problem. But it signs me off before the mouse shows up. It is just a flash of the wallpaper then I signed off. I have been using the system restore cd but it just sits there idling. This is really pissing me off.

try last known good mode? Odds are that won't work as it is updated after a succesful logon but it's easy enough to test

The info I posted above is the fix for the problem!!!!!!!!

Your profile is corrupted and the fix I posted is the only way to restore it..

I have had this very same thing happen to my own PC and a couple of others.
It only takes about 5 mins to repair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do a goole search on corrupted profiles in Win XP and you will get the same fix as I posted.. :)

Tacky1's right.

You're not shutting down the system, you're getting logged off. Therefore it's a hosed-up profile.
