NE1 know of a free progie to do this?
Went to www.download.com and dried a few progies including this one (http://www.download.com/TMPGEnc/3000-2194_4-10353607.html?tag=lst-0-3) and they're all convoluted and crap. Just want something simple and easy.
Thanks.

virtual dub developed by a classmate of mine actually at UCSB... I hated that guy! He aced all his tests... and that website says.. "Proof that I had too much free time in college"
www.virtualdub.org
EDIT: nevermind it can't write mpeg... I think I used it to go the other way... mpeg->avi sorry JTT.
Suggestion: i would use a video cd writing software, create a video cd and then grab the video off that.

Gordian Knot at http://gordianknot.sourceforge.net/
It's a DVD backup/authoring front end, comes bundled with a lot of apps. You should be able to convert AVI to mpeg. However, you DO know that AVI is just a carrier file, right? It can be encoded with anything, as long as the codec is supported.
Out of curiosity, why do you want to go from AVI to MPEG? ... and what version of MPEG? Or yeah, you can just make a VCD and extract the mpeg from that.

I searched high and low for an easy to use program a few months ago, and Blaze Media (http://www.blazemp.com/blaze_media_pro.asp) was the best program. You can D/L an eval from their site.
