i just got sbc dsl. everything is up and running. i tried to install the zonealarm firewall they recomend and have major problems logging in. I uninstalled it and every thing is good again. how important is it that i install the firewall. what else can i do?

It depends. What kind of platform are you on? Windows or Mac? What version of Windoze? Do you have a router or do you go directly online?

what's happening is, you have 2 different firewalls. You have the windows firewall in SP2, and then you have ZoneAlarm.
Use one or the other, not both.

so windows already has a firewall? is it any good?

The SP2 firewall isn't bad at all. It is far better than nothing, but if you already have ZA, that is fine. Just use ZA and diable the XP firewall -if you have SP2 installed the firewall is on by default.
Right-click an adapter connection, properties, Advanced tab...the firewall settings (for each connection) can be found there.
SBC is practically turning into AOL with all the software crap they try to push on you. Ditch their install disks. I use their DSL service and connect with my router...then use my trusty browser and email client ala Firefox...no need for all that extra s/w.
