Not sure the correct URL for SBC, but you should be able to go to the homepage and access your e-mail via your web browser. Also, you can use e-mail software if you type in the smtp and pop server information, which likely will be in the appropriate fields in whatever tool you are using now....

Forgot about #2. You should set up a firewall and antivirus software if you are going to use the internet at all. If you are uncomfortable leaving it connected, you should be able to unplug it, but you may need to refresh the IP address on your nic in order to use it again, when you plug the cable back in.

Neither virus software nor firewalls are a gauruntee against attacks. However, IMO the biggest threat of being attacked/infected (unless you are runnig a website, in which case disconnecting the cable is not an option) is going to be from downloading questionable/pirated software, downloading unknown e-mail attachments, and visiting questionable websites, not from leaving the modem connected.

www.sbc.yahoo.com let's you login to your area and check your email, etc.

Get either a router with a Firewall, or load Firewall software on your system.

Everyone who is on broadband should test their system for hacker vulnerability.

Here are some good sites that will check your system:

Or you can check your email using a mail client like Eudora or Outlook.

I've used Eudora since '95. :thumbup

Don't rely on simply a NAT firewall in your router...get a personal firewall (XP2 works well enough) get virus protection and use Firefox products...

Thunderbird rocks...

Then, of course, read the sticky on Adware etc...
