Any BARF dirtbike riders out there? I just got a dirtbike so I am looking for some people to ride with at Hollister. It's been about 1.5 years since I rode dirt so I kinda want to take it easy. Anyone interested?

We are driving down to Hollister from San Jose Saturday early morning. PM me if you're interested...

JeebusX

I think it will be more of a "Let's take it easy" ride until we actually get out there, then it will be a "Let's go like hell" kinda ride. That's usually how things go! Anyway, riding is always about having a good time so let's do it.

JoeBar

Out of our group of 5 riders, 3 are beginners and 2 are advanced dirt riders. You choose who you want to ride with ;)

steveac
10-08-2002, 12:05 PM
id consider myself experienced.. but not advanced.
i can take doubles , but am not comfortable getting extreme air.
i can do 99% of black diamond trails with any problems.

although i might be a bit slower on them.

JoeBar
10-08-2002, 12:34 PM
I usually ride with the advanced guys. When they go fast, they wait for me, when they jump, I watch ;) :teeth

JeebusX
10-08-2002, 12:44 PM
Yeah, I have been riding since I was 10 so I do OK but I recently had ACL surgery so I need to take it easy at first to see how it goes. No need to be back on those stupid crutches again!!

jimboecv
10-08-2002, 12:52 PM
JeebusX, I, Jimboecv, recently popped my ACL and have been waiting to get back into the dirt just like you. I did the knee in March and haven't been in the dirt since. I'm going to see Dr. Ting tomorrow for my follow up so we'll see what he sez...
One more reason not to crash? I've gained 25 pounds since I blew my ACL.

JeebusX
10-08-2002, 01:04 PM
Hurts doesn't it?:cry I did mine New Year's Eve and had the surgery in March. The injury has healed great, it's just the leg muscles around it that I need to build up again. I will definitely be using a brace! Can't wait to get out there again though, it is sooo much fun

sad=man
10-08-2002, 01:23 PM
give me a few months. then I'll be a dirt rider :teeth

jimboecv
10-08-2002, 01:23 PM
Yeah my leg is really skinny now. Talk about a bummer? My bike's an XR400 and it was my second ride. Only 78 miles on it and it got parked for 6 months. Good news is, I got all new gear while I was waiting. I'm going to see if the Doc will write me a perscription for braces (which he said he would anyway) so I can get'em and get riding and doing anything outside. Ugh, I can't wait. At lease we missed the hot weather and dust, huh?

10-08-2002, 01:47 PM
Once it starts to rain a little I'll be switching over for a few dirt days...Butch usually takes me out and whoops up on me..between him and starting the dam 400 Yamaha..I am well done by the end of the day..:teeth

I wear a brace for my abra-cadavered ACL..it works pretty damn good! I would recommend to any one with a knee problem.

I like to ride in the dirt, but I prefer Carnegie over Hollister. Does anybody else ride at Carnegie? I would be really interested in a BARF dirt ride, especially after it rains a little. I'm a pretty decent trail rider and hill climber, but "big air" to me is getting about 3 feet off the ground.

longwaytofall
10-08-2002, 02:35 PM
i ride in the dirt, so if we are making a ride, just count me in! i like hollister the best, and metcalf is cool too. we should get a huge party going on some weekend up at hollister, that would be deep.

What kind of bike do you guys have? I am planning on getting one but I am not sure which is best for me and this area.

A Mille R? I hate you. You can't come riding with us.

Just kidding, sweeeeeet bike. I want one!

Small 4 strokes are always nice to start out on.

I have a CR500, which I would NOT reccomend as a starter bike.

JeebusX

Well bust that thing out and let's ride! I say we plan a dirt ride at Hollister soon. I am going to work on the bike this week so maybe next weekend. Woo Hoo!:thumbup

Why don't you guys just join Jennifer (my wife), my friends Belinda and Mick and me to the Training Wheels (http://www.cera.org/tw2002.htm) Enduro on November 3rd? It is our first Enduro and it's supposed to be easy.

Who want's to join the BARF enduro team?

DRZ
10-08-2002, 07:45 PM
Jnglst~Dirt riding at Thill should count providing you stayed on two wheels.:teeth

JeebusX~No the Doc (my wife:teeth) has not yet cleared me for dirt riding. A guy at work just broke his hand so my head honcho at work asked me and one other co worker to stay off our dirtbikes for a month or so...he was jokin of course:laughing..I think:wow

JoeBar~Its just too soon as far as my leg goes to do the Enduro. Thanks for the offer though, and have a blast!

I thought about getting a dirtbike, but I've already got three street bikes and there's no more room in my garage for more bikes :laughing

Well... that and the whole "Spend $5000 on dirtbike and stuff and use it maybe once a month". Bleh. Can you rent dirtbikes? :laughing

ATK 406. Great beginner bike. Heh heh.

We're going to Clear Creek this Fri, Sat and Sun. It will be too dry, but we've got a dozen guys with alcohol, tabacco and firearms. And motorcycles. Clear Creek rocks, but the best is

Stoneyford
then Clearcreek
Cow Mtn
Hollister
Metcalf sucks, except for maybe the snake trails...

knellcast
10-09-2002, 01:12 PM
I'm shredy!!
Hollister is "ok", metcalf is lame but good for beginners since it as all those one way trails (don't have to worry about head-ons). It's all about Cow Mountain, CDC Camp(Elk Mountain/Deer Creek) and Stoneyford!!

Anyone ride at Clubmoto? I've been itching to ride their new supercross track :devil

Tude
10-09-2002, 01:51 PM
I agree on all the OHV "parks" I would rather drive another hour and have miles and miles of trails with no people on them. Hollister is good for beginners though, Metcalf a waste of getting packed and loaded unless you live really really close, and Carnegie is downright dangerous with all the idiots.

The Stonyford/Middle Creek areas are the best for varied skills, they have miles and miles of fire roads, PLUS miles of singletrack, so everyone can be happy. Georgetown and Elkins Flat are fun too and really varied.

Kevin and I are heading up to Stonyford this weekend (12-13th) with a group of people, and camping in a place with trees and a nice stream running through it. Anyone else is always welcome to join us anytime :)

OldFatGuy
10-09-2002, 02:26 PM
Of the OHV parks, Carnegie is my favorite because of all the hillclimbs and technical terrain. I have yet to have any problem with the aforementioned "idiots". Hollister, IMO, is too developed. All the street signs, one-way trails, etc. make me feel more like I'm commuting to work than riding a dirt bike. My favorite of all is Clear Creek, but I can't justify driving the extra distance just for one day of riding, so I usually end up riding Carnegie unless I'm camping overnight.

Considering that you rode on an asphalt and dirt on street tires, you qualify for SuperMotard!!! You just need to practice the jumps now ;) :teeth

steveac
10-10-2002, 04:54 PM
I could potentially go on saturday..
im a no go for sunday..
as i have other plans.

metcalf is close.. really close.
and good for beginners.

hollister is acceptable.. but i need to be motivated to drive down there.

carnegie is too easy to get lost. Ive been there and didnt really enjoy it there.. wide open spaces are fun.. but not when you are learning. the fact that barely any trails are marked means you definately want to make sure you areoff the hill before it starts getting dark. we got lost up there and in finding our way down we found a nice tril which ended in a sheer dropoff..
the thought of almost dying riding off a cliff doesnt appeal to me.

ill go back to carnegie some day.. but it wont be soon.

I know my way around Carnegie pretty well and would be happy to lead those who are less familiar. But you're right that it's not a good place for beginners. Hollister, on the other hand, seems to be much more for beginners than experienced riders. If you guys ever want to go to Carnegie, let me know. But Hollister isn't really worth the drive for me. I'd rather drive a little farther to Clear Creek and make a weekend out of it.

JeebusX
10-10-2002, 05:12 PM
Steveac,

Metcalf is closed on sat for a race, read here http://www.parkhere.org/prkpages/moto.htm

I am into Hollister, been riding there off and on since I was 10 but have not been there since 1992 because I have been living abroad. Anyone that wants to go, PM me by tomorrow because I don't have a 'puter at home. If not, I will be in a black Toyota stepside (2WD). Look for the CR500 and whooped rider parked nearby :laughing :barf

steveac
10-10-2002, 05:27 PM
hollister is big enough that if you dont have a good idea where people you know park, you arent likely to find them.. especially if youve never met them before.

i havent decided yet whether to go..
if i do..i will be in a black chevy silverado 1500 2wd
yamaha yz250

usually try to park on the main road out by the flat track.

Didn't mean to offend if I did, I have just had too many close calls, and my boyfriend was hit by someone riding recklessly on a quad coming around a corner (the quad rider was going too fast, completely out of control, lost control and slammed into him on his bike). I have been there maybe 5 times and watched 3 people flown out, all from collisions with other bikes or quads. Just way too many people in too small an area, I no longer feel safe there.

OldFatGuy

No problem. I wasn't offended. I was just defending my favorite OHV park which can be, admittedly, a little crowded. Much better in the middle of the week.

Got down to hollister at about 3pm with a friend..

Didnt see you guys.. but we hit most of the upper trails and some of the lower trails.

the weather was perfect. As far as riding in dust is concerned..
Id say im much more of a dust oriented person than a mud oriented person.

I may head down there when the weather get a little cooler.. buyt you wont find me there on a rainy day.

Just made a last minute descision to load up the DB's and head to Hollister. I drive a grey Jeep Wrangler that's pretty highly lifted with large tires. If you head down, stop and say hi.

So sorry to hear about Jennifer's bike! We had a great 2 days at Stonyford, dusty as hell and zero traction, but fun nonetheless. There were few people out there with the conditions which made it okay.

Unfortunately I am in a similar position as Jennifer now as on Sunday I started hearing a weird noise....looks the main bearing has gone bad and we'll be splitting the cases on the Gas Gas too. Hopefully all the bikes will be done in time for the rain.

Are you guys planning to race? Good luck if you do! Conditions were do-able with nobody out there on the trails, but don't forget you x-ray vision goggles if you plan to ride there during the enduro ;) Unless we get a lot of rain this week the trails should be quite a challenge.

I am in the East Bay as well (and am a girl too). I usually ride every weekend, but won't start riding again for a couple weeks. The dust is just too much right now, plus I am rebuilding my bikes motor right now so she is out of commission :(

Feel free to PM me your email address if you would like to be included in upcoming rides, there is an informal group of gals that ride in this area, and we usually send emails around letting people know where we are riding.
