Jeebuz, that's a hell of a bike. Any n00bs need a bike to grow into? Here's your chance.

How's that bike for touring? The gears are turning in S.V.'s brain...

Well its got the engine that's for sure; but after all, it is a big/bad sportbike. Too darned cramped for this old fart for long distance, although I know guys who ride long distance "sport touring" on them w/soft/hard saddlebags. (do a search on zx12r.org or bikeland.org) Many say the Hayabusa is better for that.

The biggest issue w/that bike is insurance. Hard to find unless you spend lots of time looking; even then it's pricey. Many insurance companies will not even quote them. I managed to get it thru GMAC, but I pay double the price of my ZRX ($500 vs. $250 yearly full- "everything" coverage.)

The other thing is mileage isn't that great...~33-35mpg. But most peeps w/those bikes didn't buy them for mileage. We bought them for the thrill ride. It's surely one of the baddest rides on the planet...all for $5K. A hella lot cheaper than a Ferrari, twin-turbo Porsche, vette, etc. 9sec quarter-miles & 185+ mph top speeds are few & far between (it's geared for 194 @ redline.)

One ride is good for a month of adredalin (sp?), it makes a hella great second ride. Not a senseable bike, but a hella FUN one! :teeth FWIW, IMHO....

$500 a year for FULL coverage??!! Sweet Jesus. My Blackbird (similar insurance classification) is a lot more than that. Do you have a blanket policy with GMAC?

Not really. We'll assume Des Moines because we don't know the actual city. According to Yahoo Maps its 1819 Miles to San Ramon (my house). Assuming a top speed of 194 mph, that would take roughly 9.5 hours to complete. OF course, I'll have to....I mean "someone" would have to stop for gas and such. Add in another 1.5hrs for time spent at the pump, that's only an 11hr trip. Hmmm.....

You ever watch NASCAR? Those guys can do that shit in like 11 seconds. I'm BOUND to run into some of those folks between Iowa and here. We can count that in with the fuel stops, no sweat.

I don't know what you mean by "blanket policy" but here's the coverage in a nutshell:

I got both bikes on the policy for a total of $784 a year. Both bikes have "full everything" coverage:

uninsured/underinsured motorist
vandalism/fire/theft
increased liability from minimum to 100/300/100
added additional $3000 acc. coverage both bikes (Dymags, Akro, etc.)
medical coverage for injuries for both me & other party
Anything I forgot at 6am & a half a cup of jo' ??? zzzzzz...

It's pretty much the highest coverage they allow; I am planning on changing it soon as the ZRX isn't worth anything anymore & I also want to raise the liability to 100/500/100. I have a clean record for >15yrs. & old fart (just ~50.) There was some discount but I forget how much for doing both bikes/same policy.

They have the best rate, but I've not made a claim yet. So donno if they are as good as they say...? (no claims since 1978' for me.) I hope this helps...GMAC seems to rock?

there are several shipping companies to choose from...

I believe the rate from Iowa would be ~$400...

FYI, I've seen local ZX12R's as cheap as $4500 for a beater; or as low as $1200 for a salvage bike....
