Okay. I don't know if any of you saw my posts about three weeks ago, but I managed to locate a couple of factory green zx7r fairings from a guy in San Jose. I've got a 96 ZX7r in the factory burgundy color with fairings that are f**ked up beyond all recognition. Yes, FUBAR! Basically, I told myself I wasn't going to put too much money into this bike unless I could get stuff fairly inexpensive because the bike was purchased pretty cheaply considering the extensive cosmetic damage.
Well..the fairings were hella cheap and in pristine condition so I just couldn't pass up the opportunity. I should have thought ahead! Once I actually got the fairings, the next hurdle was getting them painted. I did the usual get three quotes stuff, but the lowest price I could find was around $250 and the highest was close to $500! The shops I visited all told me the same thing, the labor hours in prepping were gonna be significant. Plus, the work they did on other bikes is great, but I don't need great and they wouldn't listen to what I needed. I'm glad that they have standards and all, but hey what about the rest of us?
I hate to say it but these quotes came directly from the shops on this forum. Now, I'm certain their quality is well above board and probably even Concours quality, but hey! I'm a working stiff and just need a basic, but good paint job. So am I saying don't use the guys on this board? Hell no! But.. if you want a good paint job that will surprise you..read further..
Creative Auto Works on Capp St. just down the street from Werkstatt is da shizzy. A guy that works at Werkstatt recommended Randy and he hooked me up. Essentially, I paid about 50% off the lowest price listed here for two factory burgundy matched and painted fairings. These were the factory green and one had a crack, which I can't even tell ever existed since the paint job. The clear coat is amazing and the color is deep! He must have used several coats, but to me it doesn't even matter. For the price, you can't do better. I Swear it!!
Call Randy at 415-626-8992. He's been around 10 years and has done bike work before. I am certainly going to use him again to do my stuff!
I'll post pics of the fairings soon.
