You know, I have only heard that these bikes are really nice. Amazing on the track I assume. But can anyone explain what makes this lil 400 so sweet?
$6k for a 1991, is like, alot, especially on a 400. Yes, I know it's similar to the NS250, which is like $25k brand new, track/race ready(almost..).

Here's a lil more info:
v four "vforce" motors fire in pairs like a twin, so they do make torque down low, but revs into the "teens" like its on freakin FIRE, plus the cams are gear driven so aurally, it sounds like its a freight train with VTEC.
A quote (little long):
The Rl can be a bit too much for the road. Enter the NC30. To be
honest, I didn't think the 400cc NC30 could compete. It's a toy and
an old toy at that, with under half the Rl's 150bhp. Parked beside
the Yamaha, the Honda looks dated, almost clumsy: that bulky tail
unit, the unfaired headlights, the skinny tank. Next to the arrowhead
aggression and cutting edge design of the Rl, even the NC's beautiful
single-sided swing-arm is looking a bit limp-wristed. One thing the
NC did not look, though, was shagged. Park a seven year- old bike
beside a new one and you'd expect it to look a bit tatty. Not this
one.
Immaculate build quality of the bikes when new and minimal Japanese
market use mean many NCs are in unbelievable shape and still showing
fewer than 10,000 miles. You won't have to look too hard to find one
this good. Get on board and the NC's timewarp feel continues. The
throttle and clutch actions are smooth and light, the brakes are firm
and responsive (our bike did have braided hoses, mind) and the
suspension has that soft, but controlled feeling you get from the
very best sports bikes. The bars seldom flap and when they do, it's
fun, not fear. My CBR600 felt woefully baggy and rattly in
comparison. And that engine. The V-four gurgles without complaining
at 4000rpm and will pull adequately from 6000. For a 400cc motor with
a 14,500rpm, 60bhp top-end and naff-all torque, this is no small
achievement. Drop below 10,000rpm and the power doesn't disappear
like you'd imagine on a screamer. It drops, obviously, but not by
a 'Damn, bollocks, I look like a tit' amount. There's always enough
power to nudge you back towards the redline. And the delivery is so
smooth that even the most mechanically sympathetic riders are bumping
off the rev-limiter until they tune in to the motor's wail.
But, and it is a big but, the NC is up against the mighty Rl - And
good though the little Honda is, how in hell can it compete with
something as cataclysmically powerful and dynamically brilliant as
the Rl ? Off I went to find out. Eight minutes later, I knew the
answer. The sneaky little bastard fights back by turning scary
unknown B roads into hormone pumping grin-fests. Allow me to take you
through a corner on both bikes and you'll understand:

Are the ergos on the VFR400 as comfortable and upright as they are on the newer, larger VFRs?

Nope, but no where near as uncomfortable as todays Duc or Gix ergos, IMO it confidently puts you in "sporting" ergos, but battle ready too! Not as plush as your FZr 400, though!

Would you consider parting out the bike? I sure could use a few parts from an NC30/NC35!***Droool**:blush

Sorry, I would not wanna do that to my 'ole baby, but make me an offer I can't refuse! I could make more money parting it out, but why!

You don't want to know - but a little under $10,000. However if you see pics you'll see the difference...I am getting pics this week...but in general the bike is an RVF (newer than the VFR and a little racier) plus it has the brand new Rossi paint scheme, matching race fairings and of course fully adjustable Penske shock.
Have I justified paying the $10K??? Almost - after my first track day I'll be convinced :teeth

just wanted to reply to the vfr400/r1 comparison. There is no comparison. If you want 150bHP don't buy a VFR400. There are many reasons to buy a VFR400 including the coolness factor, the whine of the gear driven cams, the pro-arm, the RC30 look, or simply having something different than everybody else. The smaller size also makes this bike a dream to throw around a twisty set of corners. The R1 is just another run-of-the-mill open classer that rides like a 450 pound bike. again, no comparison.

LOL yah ancient! everyone is getting mini V4 madness around here or what? :p
fwiw the 400 is not like it's bigger brother at all in riding position. it is more akin to the mille or even gixxer at least the one I have is. wide tank and the clip ons are fairly low and if I squoosh all the way back in the saddle (solo tail) it's a long reach to the bars. and with slightly higher & tighter footpegs than the aprilia, I wish to find some adjustable rearsets, though the fixed peg tygas look sweet. it's no cruiser bike and I have to laugh when I get behind the windscreen and start to wind that engine up - makes every outing feel like you're on the track :teeth see there's that stupid grin again! first is wayyy long but once you get rolling you can play the close ratio trans all you want or until they take your license away.
sure it's no '04 liter bike, but a very competant throwback time machine in a manageable size for many. if your heart doesn't melt each time you see the single sided swingarm and lovely spoked wheels then the gear driven engine whine should do it.
a credit card ignition would just be over the top!!! alas my 400 doesn't have that feature.
glad to see so much interest in these little wonders.
