People were flying this weekend.

Fast 400s (Mike Lohmeyer on a VFR400) were in the 2:03s.

SV650 times broke into the 1:59s for the first time ever.

I think Holeshot clicked off a 1:57 in the Open Superbike race.

600 Production times were in the 1:55s.

Randolph unofficially did a 1:53.0 in practice.

BARF riders? Congrats to kneedrag for sewing up the Open Production championship on his Michelin-shod Kawasaki ZX-9R, beating a herd of GSX-R1000s to the title. I believe Holeshot took Open Production Top Novice of the year as well. Weird seeing a number 1 on a yellow plate (for the Pirelli photo ops when the day was done).

6th in Open Prod
12th in Open Superbike

Mike's correct, I squeaked a 1:57 by..barely! 157:99! I strung 58's together too. I was stoked on that!

Anyone there on Sat would have seen me pissed at a barely 2:06 bike. Something changed, but I'm not sure what. Changed the sag number front and rear and the bike went better. Logged the changes.

Mike was laughing at my #1 on the yellow plate. Hey, SOMEONE has to be #1 squid!

Parts I like on the GSX-R1000:

Suspension Front : Circuit one
Suspension Rear : Penske 8100 (could use an 8987 though)
Rearsets : Graves
Dampner : Ohlins
Tires : Pirelli Supercorsa SC1/SC2
Brake Fluid : Motul RBF 600

Parts I don't like:

Sliders :Intuitive
Rotors : Waves (Stock rotors in prod class work better)
Lines : -2.7's
ECU : Stock (lurchy)

I'm hoping Christofu's okay. Saw him go down late in the day...

Good job Berto! I'm glad you you decided to hold off doing 1:57s until the S/B race. On second thought, stick with the Pirellis you don't need to be going any faster.

Thanks Shawn and Budman. That was some good tech work!

I got into the low 2:00's the whole time in prod, and somehow watched you still run away from me and who was in front of me (Wilson?). Who was in front of you?

Congrats on the win man, and the overall Production Open #1 plate. You rock!

Hey... I'm still alive. Being a couch potato today with icepacks all over my right side.

It was totally cruel. I was racing for my first ever podium finish. I was in 2nd place on the last lap, and lining up the leader (Jeff Schnapp) for a pass going into turn 3.

A 650 Twins rider overtook both of us, drifted across Jeff's line and took out his front wheel. Jeff went down. I was already drifting wider to get an inside line into T3 and Jeff went straight under my front wheel. I went straight over the handlebars. Jeff doesn't even remember me running him over!

The sad thing was that if we'd been about 10 seconds slower over the course of the race we'd have been lapped by the Open GP winner.

I guess I'll have to wait until next year for my first plastic trophy :(

Wilson won the race, Doyle second. I believe King was just in front of you.

I've had some heated battles with Wilson, (broken body-work to prove it) so there was no sense tangling with him. Doyle was an unknown, so when he came by I let him go. Not that I could of beat the time of a 1:56.6 he put down.

I knew I could run in the 1:57s maybe a high 1:56 but I would have had to hang it out. Starting second wave was big disappointment, I was really cautious getting through the backmarkers. I was fortunate having the option to pick who I wanted to race.

Thanks for the Kudos guys (Holeshot,Crash,Budman) I really appreciate it.

Thunderhill 10/20/02
650 Twins - 9th Place (best lap 2:05.5)
F1 - 20-somethingth Place (buncha high 2:05s)

After moving from NYC and my former club LRRS last year, I'd have to say my first year racing with the AFM has only been a lukewarm success. I didn't hurt myself too badly and I only crashed once. My results and laptimes are disappointing to me, but my stock-motored SV650 seems to be running well and the suspension appears to be edging closer to the ballpark. I believe my laptimes will drop with some more human software adjustment and track familiarity. I'll get a motor someday. . .

This was my second visit to Thunderhill and I enjoyed it much more this time, seeing as I didn't crash like before. I shredded a rear metzerelli late Saturday and was able to go faster Sunday with a fresh rear doughnut and new suspension settings that my girlfriend suggested (and she doesn't even ride a motorcycle) <==not kidding! She actually stopped the tearing!

See yas all next year at afm event #1 (N or S?)

I saw one crash on the opening lap in turn two. Appeared to be crowd effect on the opening lap. Tight turn, tight group and only so much room.

The other one I know of was in turn 8 when someone went to pass on the outside and was run wide.

Oh yeah, going through 6,7,8 on one lap, I thought I was gonna get stuffed by a helicopter that was flying low and close to the track, kinda weird. I mean I am used to getting pasted my alot of types of bikes, but a helicopter, geezzzz.

Sorry to hear about your crash, Chris. Hope you heal up soon. Hope your bike didn't get too banged up either. That bike's a beauty.

Yep, I was the blue singles bike, Jeff was the orange one. I know I was lying very still, right next to the track. Mostly because I thought at the time that I'd broken my collar bone. But still, the first words out of my mouth when the corner workers arrived were "did they red-flag the race?" :laughing

If they'd red-flagged it I would have got 2nd place when they went back to the last scored lap :laughing

I honestly believe that the only reason they didn't flag it was because the checkered flag was already flying (apparently Jeff and I crossed for the white flag only about 10 seconds ahead of the Open GP leaders getting the checkered flag). Not much point putting out the red flag when the race is officially already over, right? :mad

I don't remember the other bike number but it was a ducati and an aprilia. We picked up both bikes, unfortunally we did not see them go down.
It is my personal opinion that the front tire of the aprilia hit the rear tire of the ducati in the middle of turn two causing them to go down.

Congrats to those who finished the season on a high note... especially to Berto for making our novice season a solid team effort in the pits. It was a great learning year. I was feeling pretty good about the weekend, starting off on friday with lap times equal to my race pace from last event... 2:06's. But unfortunately, my tendancy for horrible starts and poor aptitude for getting through slower traffic bit me again. Not exactly sure what happened, but in an effort to get around guys I knew were running 2:10's + in practice, I lost it going through T5A trying to make a move into T6. What started as a low side, with both wheels going out nearly simultaneously, turned into a highside for the bike and me simply falling off behind it, sliding feet first on my back and watching the sparks fly as the bike it made it's way on towards T6. oops. Not exactly how I planned on finishing the season... but there's plenty of time to rebuild and get prepared for season #2.

Again, congrats to all. Cheers!

Zoran had a similar suggestion. From an AFM post regarding how a rider who leads a race, crashes, and causes a red flag can still be awarded the win due to the rule that scoring reverts to the last completed lap:

"If I lead race and crash, I'm going to take piss on track so I get red flag and still win!"

wei7, the turn 2 Open Twins crash happened just ahead of me, though I was looking elsewhere and didn't see exactly how it happened. Hearing it from Don's side, Knut on the Duc tried an outside pass and clipped Don's tire, at which point he took them both out - not sure how the Duc faired, but the Aprilia was pretty thoroughly trashed. That little incident made my eyeballs grow to the size of baseballs, since there was a fair amount of chaos immediately behind 'em and since I REALLY didn't want to crash in the last race of the season.

That swooping helicopter was a trip! WTF were they doing? Joe who went down in turn 8 wasn't hurt badly, and I didn't see any other incidents that seemed bad enough to have a helicopter strafe the racetrack.

Hey Jeff! Long time no talk from the other boards. You never did come out to one of our trackdays (speedyard). I heard you did the CCS and podiumed. Good for you! I just heard from some people that Knut did go on the outside going into T2 and made it pretty clean but Don Dahl tried to tuck it under him and hit the rear. Heard Don broke his rib but they talked afterwards. Well nice seeing you on the board Jeff!

Hole, Bryan Lundo rides pretty tight on people from what I see. He is a great guy in person and a great instructor on the track. Sorry to hear he was aggressive on you. I like him but never raced with him, just some tracktime and hes great.

Wei,

He may be a cool guy off the track, and I'm all for aggressive ridding I suppose, but not when you come 1" from killing a guy ahead of me, and possibly me as well. That's just bullshit in club racing in my book.

Like I said: it's a goal now. I rarely get pissed off at other riders to boot...

Hole, very sorry for any misunderstanding. I am not saying he is right in any way. He gets pretty damn close when dicing around on just a trackday. Hey Wei! Nope, didn't make it to one of your track days this year, but hopefully I'll make it next year. I really didn't get to ride much this year after a nasty crash at Sears in May that broke my collarbone and trashed my bike - that pretty much took out the whole summer. A guy passed me on the outside going into turn 11 and clipped my front wheel...

I might have misquoted Don, but he certainly seemed under the impression that Knut caused the incident. Who knows - "stuff" happens. I didn't talk to Knut, but Don was basically o.k. and in good spirits (except for trashing the bike he was trying to sell!) - some swelling around the knees and in one of his wrists, and probable broken ribs. That sure took the wind out of my sails, though - once my eyeballs returned to normal, I lost the gumption to race and cruised around at a trackday pace to finish way back. But I finished!

In regards to the helicopter at the race.... this is just speculation, but it sure looked like they were filming. The copter was too small to be a medivac, and there was a film crew roaming the pits quite a bit. Never did ask what it was for, but maybe someone was doing a documentary or some such.
