View Full Version : How do you choose Chain-weight (ie. 525, 530, etc)

What's the deal with all this "520 Conversion" crap? I just want to regear the RC, but everyone is saying to change the chain weight. No one has really told me why, other than saying that 520 is cheaper to replace.

Since I'll be tossing my ~75$ stock chain, I need a better reason than saving 10$ per chain that I replace. Do they just transfer power better?

I'm going for 15/41 gearing on the RC... I never really can use 6th unless I'm breaking the law... so I figure I might as well milk her for what she's worth. Just want to know if I should change the chain now, and if so, WHY?

THanks Racer Dudes!

Reciporcating mass (I'll start it off, since we PM'd about it)

Holeshot,
Although I know what you mean (reduction in effective rotational mass), the chain doesn't reciprocate.

whoops! See why I had Donovan post her matt! That is what meant...

OK. So it's a "less rotat'l inertia = quicker acceleration" thing. Hm.

You know, new chains are like 100$. Is it worth it? I'm better off spending that money on something really racey. Like stickers.

Spend the money on Tires and Trackdays. I doubt the chain is holding you back.

is a 520 really ideal for the RC? i would think the 530 chain would be better suited for the hp/torque the RC has. i'm debating the chain conversion for the TL myself.

I don't think the chain is holding me back either.
My purpose for asking about the chain is because the RC is geared very (too) tall for commuting and I need to change the sprockets. Then comes the question of chain size.

I'll be at the track on Nov5+6... with my FZR600 and its 530-chain :teeth

Why not take the RC? It's made for the track you know!

I know the RC is made for the track --- in the hands of a skilled rider.

The FZR is also "made for the track" with all the modifications I put in there: heavier springs, better rear shock; fork brace. I might even splurge and buy a steering damper since I raised the rear ride height.

I want to get good, really good. Like you guys who race. And I know that it's not going to happen on such a nice bike as an RC because I'll just be masking my errors. Sure, the FZR might dump me on my head if I'm not careful but I'm betting all my money that the guys who are fast on the track didn't start on a state-of-the-art machine.

(Plus, whenever I pass a newer bike on my '91, I feel like I'M THE FUCKIN' MAN!!!)

Yeah but the RC at the track rocks. It rails. And it passes really nice too.
