I've reached a high enough level of satisfaction with one of my recent projects to make it public. A few of you have seen it already. It's called MiniBARF.
For all of you techies out there with web enabled PDAs and phones, you can surf the board now without the wait and formatting problems of the standard interface. It's not WAP, it's just "thin".
For low bandwidth and low horsepower users the board will seem much faster due to reduced page complexity and less data being spit across the wire.
Those of you surfing at the office may be pleased by the lack of avatars (some are wary of avatars at public terminals) a benefit, although MiniBARF will not strip images posted into threads.
For those of you *nix users, you can even use your text-only browser to read the site now.
MiniBARF is totally experimental at this point, and I'm sure that if any of you start using it you'll find problems with it. Please post any difficulties you encounter and I'll address them as time permits.
For those of you looking for more robust features, they're probably going to take a bit longer as the whole point of it is to be as minimal as possible.
Your existing username and passwords will work if you're prompted for a login. I don't EXPECT that there will be any trouble bouncing between Mini- and normal BARF views, but if you do encounter a problem let me know and I can fix it.

Enjoy! :teeth
Yes, it's ugly as hell in a full sized browser, you have to see it small to appreciate it

MiniBARF was inspired by my new Toshiba w/ built-in Wi-Fi... from which I'm posting this message.
UnixGal... I haven't tested enough w/ lynx, but I'll turn some attention that direction.
Next on the feature list will be PMs, I'll post when it's ready.

Sounds like the problem I always have with Sprint. I get that error all the time. You just have to try again later when the network hampsters have been fed. :laughing
But I do get
406: Not acceptable
on my phone. I'll have to mess with it later when I'm not at work.

See - I'm not sure if it satisfies WAP requirements... like I said earlier, it's just "thin". I think most phones direct their traffic through proxies of some sort, much like the original Palm clients used a "clipping" server.
Someday, when BARF is rolling in dough, I'll contact AvantGo or someone about doing the WAP thing. Until then, it's the best I can do! :cry :cry

I have a crapppy sprint TP2100 and get Web Service problem: please contact the service provider. 1015: Invalid content type.
Whatever that means?

Yeah, I figured that it wouldn't satisfy WAP content guidelines, but hey, it was worth a shot. Still, looks damn neat though!

PocketPC seems to be covered. I tried lynx last night and, although it could be tweaked a bit, it worked pretty well. Guess we'll have to go the WAP route someday. Anyone know what's required? :teeth
I'm just waiting the the first "HEY GUYS, I'M POSTING FROM THE TOILET! Wait, hold on. Urghhh Urgghhhhh URGHHHHH! Ok, I'm back."

I could probably have WAP down in less than a day. I think its some pretty simple shiznit. Anyway, maybe I might look into doing something as the rain will be here soon.
Um, I hopeing to test out the PalmOS here pretty soon. ;)

I forget what a 1015 error is, but I get the same on my Qualcomm 2760. I was actually expecting a 1019 (Compile error), which means either invalid data or data too large.
Considering that both the TP2100 and the QCP-2760 have "old" browsers in them, errors are to be expected. (My browser is from 1999. Ancient.)
I'll have to try from a Vision phone at work tomorrow. Maybe a Verizon phone, as well. If I get anything useful, I'll post.
I still have to try MiniBARF in lynx. It's what I usually use for my browser, and "regular" BARF is harder to navigate than Microsoft's IE-centric home page...
(Edit: OK. MiniBARF is definitely a step in the right direction, but there is definitely some missing functionality. Like, I couldn't figure out how the hell to log in, at first... ;) Oh, and having a couple of options after each post wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing... [Such as Edit/Delete Post & Reply w/ Quote. Not much else needs to be there...])
And I think I remember seeing something about a WAP Apache module recently...
/me drifts away into the "other" consciousness...

Looks pretty good in Lynx. The only thing that seems to be missing is the "View Posts Since Last Visit" option.
Hey Steve, are you aware that Toshiba has a voluntary recall on the e740s? (I just checked out their website)

it's not the phone, it's verizon. I have a lgvx10 and I get error msgs too.
On a side note, how about a BARF xml service? Then we could make our own interfaces ;)

With BARF moving to more of a sponsered site, allowing users to create their own interface would probably NOT be a good thing, that's probably asking for a bit much. It would kind negate part of the benifits to any sponsers that might want to pick up BARF.

it depends on how you do it. slashdot is a good example, using http://slashdot.org/slashdot.rdf anybody in the world can have a Slashdot front/portal, but it all leads them back to the actual pages to get the real content where the ads (if sd had any) would be.
took me a whole 5 minutes to write a page that allows me to see the rdf via my cell phone.

I am using my T720 to try and access miniBARF, and get...
The resource type
'text/html' is not
present in the client
acceptable media
types set.
This is through using a non-Verizon proxy...
I don't pay for Verizon's web service, but have found a proxy that allows access.
All I get charged is for air time(I hope! We'll see when the bill gets here...:p)

no, im not 100% sure. I'll PM you a url for my proxy thing I wrote in the next day or so. Seems to work for general browsing, but I think i'm too lazy to handle the session/login/post stuff.

Trying mini-barf on PC (not PDA). Is history limited on mini-barf? I looked at the website section and it's only two pages. Then I log in pretending to post a new thread and I only get one page.
browser is Opera and IE that I tested it on.
Just looking to browse faster.

I love minibarf! It's great when I'm travelling, using my cell phone as a modem. However, the "View Active Threads" option is missing from the forums. Any thoughts on including this link?
mini barf is great, (recently demoted to 56k) am I being a dummy and not seeing it, or does mini barf not have pm's?
cool stuff

No - no PMs. Yet. :tsc
Wow, I'm really digging the mini-barf! I've been using it since I'm in class this week, and I don't think I'll ever go back. I can now barf in class without having to worry about the "mesmorizing" avatars!
Thanks! :tsc :tsc

possible to add "view today's active threads" instead of just have "view new posts"?
that's how i primarily surf BARF.

MiniBARF is due for an overhaul. It's one of those things that we can brag about that others do not have. I will get to work on enhancing the hell out of it. :teeth

MiniBarf doesn't seem to like my T-Mobile T610. I keep getting a "Your client is not allowed access to the requested object." error. I can get to the slashdot.org/palm/ site fine but I think it's a wap website.
