View Full Version : How often do LEOs get tickets?

I know that being a LEO gives you certain perks. I know it's professional courtesy to not give a fellow LEO a ticket. I was wondering how far this courtesy extends?

We pick our spots to drive/ride like idiots. We try not to get pulled over or draw attention to ourselves. I can only speak for myself, but I'm damned emabarrased if I get stopped, and don't go flaunting my police ID to get out of a ticket.

From a non-LEO standpoint, I'd have to imagine not often. From the information all the recruiter-people gave me, over X tickets and the officer can't be insured by the department. Is there validity to this?

I know for my secret clearance, tickets were an issue... :rolleyes

An FBI agent lives across the street from me. There was a problem a few years ago. A kid hit him and he threw the kid to the ground. He was in deep shit for a few months. He didn't have any witnesses and the kid was lieing....I guess he was in jeopardy of losing his job.

I don't think they flash their badges just to get out of tickets. I do think the flash these though.

Just a little humor. Much respect to those who put themselves in harms way for the good of others.

considering that serious fuckups warrant the attention of IA, i'd say not many.

infractions probably get written off, but i'd still bet that somewhere, in a folder enshrined in black and white, there's a study of all the 'tickets' that would have gone to any given police officer.

Anyone that tells you cops don't give cops tickets is full of sh!t.

I have received 3 moving violation tickets in nearly 20 years in Law Enforcement. I can guaran-damn-tee you then next Oregon State Trooper I stop will get the friggin' book thrown at him! Those guys just LOVE to write CA cops tickets!

I must admit, I have been stopped and received a few warnings, locally and out-of-state and silversvs is 110% right, it is very, very embarrasing. I have also been stopped and was given a warning with out ever revealing my LEO status. Attitude is everything, whether you have a badge or not.

But, some guys write everyone, regardless. I'd say State Police and motor officers are the most notorious for writting other cops.

In nearly 20 years, I've been written once. I can remember when "wars" started between agencies...

Those guys love writting Californians tickets, LEO or otherwise. I dont know what's up with those guys, but a white plate somehow becomes a target for them.

Some friends and I went on a road-trip a few years back to Seattle. It's about 3AM just outside Portland when we're lit up by a state trooper. The guys tells us that he clocked us doing 95 through a construction zone (double-fine, of course). The problem with this is that there were 3 people plus luggage in a beat up Suzuki Esteem that might be able to go 80 flat out under those conditions. And the last construction zone we passed was about 40 miles back.:mad

Keep in mind that in Oregon having a guy in an orange vest picking up trash by the roadside is enough to define a 'construction zone'... oh, you mean he was off in a rest stop taking a break? oh no, he's still assigned to that area...

One of our guys got written up there, also. Long story, and not mine.

I do know that he has a standing order that if anyone pulls over an OR state trooper, he is to be called, any time day or night, and he will come out.

My badge is too little to get me out of much. I was jammin' once in Newark and a nice copper let me go...after tryin' to get me to apply there.

I don't say who I am because in reality..."who are you really?"

It's a nice courtesy, however some dept's...like CHP don't really follow that tradition.

Get this, I was on a m/c trip over the weekend.. a BBQ in Boise, ID, with a bunch of cops from all over the west coast.. US and Canada. I met an Oregon State Trooper there.. a Sergeant with 15 years on the job. He got stopped on his bike, enroute to Boise from Portland. He got cited by his own agency.

He said they have a standing order to cite all LEOs when they are stopped. If they buzz.. they get ticketed. If they get caught cutting slack, they get days on the beach. They can warn civilians, but are strictly forbiden from giving any "professional courtesy" to anyone with a badge, even their own. They are also prohibited from buzzing if they get stopped (anywhere).

He said he went to the academy with a guy that stopped their Leiutenant for speeding after 9 months on the job. The guy recognized him and let the Leiutenant off and the Leiutenant wrote him up and had him fired off probation for "unethical conduct " ..because he should have given him a ticket for his violation. That Leiutenant, Ron Ruecker, is now the Superintendent (Chief) of the Oregon State Police!

I still have a ton of friends in Oregon who are still cops. And your right, It does not amtter if you area cop or not in OR. If you have a CA lic. your getting written. I was with one ot the troppers that I know and we pulled over everyone with a CA Plate.

If you want some addresses and name I might be able to finnd my old "black book". :laughing

Roger is right I used to ride with my freind Brad who is a Douglas County Sher, he pulled every Ca plate we could find that was doing anything wrong, the most common ticket was Tailgating,
so if your going threw Oregon with Ca. plates be prepaired for eather getting pulled over or harased by local's who dont like anybody from Cal. I mean rich cali's come up and try to change law's then get run out of town, whats ya expect.

This begs the next question - what impact does an out of state ticket from OR have on a CA license? Do the points transfer? My guess is not....

Not that I am aware of. But the ticket is OR is not as easily dismissable as traffic school. There is no traffic school up there.

It will effect your insurance though.

How does it affect your insurance if it's not on your license?

Say if you don't reveal that your a LEO, don't they find out anyways because your vehicle Lic# is registered with the city/county (for protection)?

They run the plate and it will come back as "confidential", which usually means LEO.

you'd have to check with the DMV website- but I believe the points from out of state do transfer.

I always take my license plates off when I drive in OR or WA and put the dealer paper plates on. Or a big sign that says "HI- I'm from California and I'm movin' in next door" :laughing

That is not true. I took traffic school for my Oregon ticket. I wrote a letter and they allowed my to use any traffic school that was approved by the courts in my county. I found my county allowed on-line traffic school and I was able to take care of it that way and keep it off my insurance.. even though there was no Oregon-approved on-line traffic school at the time.

Actually there is traffic school and if you take the class the point does not go on your record. not sure who you heard that from? mabey a rouge LEO trying to get you to just pay the ticket insted of fighting it, who knows.

That makes no sense at all. If you thought there was no traffic school option, you would be MORE LIKELY to fight the ticket to save yourself the point on your record. People are more likely to pay their ticket if they have traffic school avialable to them. Besides, cops don't care if you pay your tickets.. it's not like they get a commission off the fine!

If anything, a "rogue" cop would tell you there was no traffic school so you WOULD fight the cite. That would ultimately result in overtime for a court appearance. :shhh Cha-ching! :thumbup

yup just to clearify things Heather (my wife) just stopped by the OSP station in Coos bay and talked with some of her leo buddies from when she worked there, and there is still traffic school.

I was with a SO up there for 7 years. We had no traffic school when I was still involved with the system.

It's been more than a few years since I have been out of the loop though.

Not that I have been to Oregon a bunch, but I was just up there in the last two weeks.

I was speeding the entire time. I passed one trooper on the "Lewis and Clark Highway." I waved, he waved back. It was a good day, for me at least.

I am not bragging, I am just saying that I had a great experience riding up in Oregon despite the really low speed limits. On some of those Hwys the limit should be about 100 for motorcycles. Sheesh...there is nobody up there anyways.

When I give warnings (I work graveyard so I don't write many cites) I tell people that if they had been stopped by a motor officer they would be getting a cite instead of a warning:teeth

I know a cop out here who sometimes rides like a squid. He was let loose 3 out of 4 times because while getting his ID and insurance card, his badge or police ID was visable. What was he doing? Wheelies!
