I can't find the threads here but I'm looking at putting the rear signals into my rear light assembly
Do signals have to be a certain color and a certain distance apart in CA?

The only requirement I know for sure is that the lights need to be D.O.T. approved. I believe short stocks are the only legal aftermarket design. Good luck.
I just reread your post. Doing that is not legal in any way shape or form.

It's not legal to do per the letter of the law, but I think with your tail light being divided like that, you could probably get away with it and still have them be visible. The biggest problem with a lot of integrated signals, is that they're not very visible if you're not looking for them. They blend in too much with your brakes.

Rear signals can be amber or red, front signals must be amber.

I just asked a similar question (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=120361) over the LEO forum.
