Is it okay to park in between two cars that are metered parking spaces?

How about sidewalks, when parking is tight, and side walks are wide?

Is it okay to park a motorcycle by the bicycle racks?

:confused

#1 is UNSAFE.. Got my bike hit last week by doing so - unmetered parking though...

#2 - Depends on the city and cop I think.

FWIW, Alameda allows for two motorcycles to share one parking space together, but not one car and one motorcycle.

On the other hand, I understand San Francisco doesn't a bike/bike or bike/car combo. It's worth checking the city code.

So for # 1) who is to say who got there first? Or does the bike just always get the ticket? If I find an open spot, I park so that there is room for a car to squeeze in behind me. So 1 is ambiguous, at best. There is no VC section that prohibits it, but there may very well be a city section for the area you live in.

2) is always illegal.

22500. No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle whether attended or unattended, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a peace officer or official traffic control device, in any of the following places:

(f) On any portion of a sidewalk, or with the body of the vehicle extending over any portion of a sidewalk, except electric carts when authorized by local ordinance, as specified in Section 21114.5. Lights, mirrors, or devices that are required to be mounted upon a vehicle under this code may extend from the body of the vehicle over the sidewalk to a distance of not more than 10 inches.

As for 3) depends on where the bike racks are located. On private property, have at it. If they are on a sidewalk, see 2)

I wish there was more info on #1. I was in San Jose yesterday and there were some huge spaces between the cars at the meters. Personally, I prefer to park more perpendicular to the curb because of how the road slopes as it gets to the curb.

Here is what I was told by a SF Parking Enforcement Officer:

1. It is not legal to share a spot, however he would not stop to specifically ticket a moto for this. He would though ticket both vehicles sharing the spot i.e. moto/car, moto/moto if the meter has ran out or they were in violation of the specific parking ordinance, i.e. parking in a loading zone or off hours, etc.

2. It is not legal to park on the sidewalk. However again he said he would not stop to specifically ticket a bike unless the bike was parked in such a way that it interfered with the ability for someone in a wheelchair or a person with a baby stroller to safely move along the sidewalk. Also if it was parked on the sidewalk right next to the curb such that it interfered with a person's ability to enter or exit a parked vehicle.

3. Don’t know, didn’t ask about this one but I guess it would depend on where the bike racks were.

Keep in mind these were his own philosophies on the subject. They probably differ from many of his fellow parking enforcement comrades.

i've been thinking about #2, the whole parking on the sidewalk thing too.

where exactly can we search this up online? dmv.ca.gov?

i wasnt able to find anywhere to park when going to get something to eat today, ended up parking about 5 rows away from where i wanted to go.. it's just more of a convenience and safety precaution of having my bike in view..

anyone have any idea how much a ticket for parking on the sidewalk would be if given?

Each city and county is subject to their local ordinances and municipal codes. As for the CVC (State law), (#1) there is no prohibition to sharing a parking space, so long as you are not double parked, (#2) Already answered above, see 22500(f) CVC), (#3) Trog is correct. If the bike racks are on public property (including a campus), then they will likely be unlawfully parked. At a shopping mall or other private property, the CVC does not apply, but they can tow your shit, just like if I parked my bike on your porch or in your backyard blocking your access to your jacuzzi!

One area I see a lot of conflict is handicapped zones. You can be cited for parking in the crosshatched area or blocking a ramp or cut-down curb adjacent to a lawfully marked HC zone on public or private property. This is a huge fine and in some cases, it may be more than your bike is worth... and your ride can be towed/impounded! :wow
