View Full Version : Fastest bike time at Laguna
High Speed

This is kind of a transfer from another post concerning car times to bike times.
CART cars times at Laguna on new track configuration are 1:08 or less.
What is the fastest motorcycle times anyone has heard of on same track layout?

Harry I'm not exactly clear as to whom (maybe Gobert) but if my poor memory serves me at all I do believe its a 1:26 or 1:25. Quite a bit sloooooower than champ cars or Indy cars or even Indy Lights.

The bike lap record is 1:24.833, set by Troy Bayliss in provisional qualifying last WSB race there.
Any serious race car will out run bikes due to all the extra grip provided by the downforce from the wings. With no extra downforce to help, bikes can only manage slightly more than 1g of lateral grip... whereas Formula 1 cars rocket around highspeed corners up over 4g's at times. The aero downforce also helps acceleration and braking for the same reason.
Compare MotoGP and F1 record pole position times at Suzuka this year for example:
MotoGP 2:04.226 Rossi
F1 1:31.317 Schumacher
It's ironic how much faster street bikes are than street cars (I seem to recall a head to head comparo at Willow Springs with a GSXR1000 and a Vette Z06 last year?), but then the reverse is true at the top levels of the sports.

Kevin Schwantz was the pilot of both those Dave.
Good article that really pisses the car guys off. It's hard for me...being both car and moto guy.

Excellent summary. It's funny when I hear people taking about bikes being the "fastest" thing.
Also, I'm sure a F1 car could manage low 1:00's or below at Laguna in Qualifying Trim.
Personally, I would choose racing F1 over Bikes anyday.

About 12 years ago or so one of the racing rags did a comparo at WillowSprings with a 250 GP bike and a 250 SuperKart using the same motor in both. At the time none of the SuperKarts were using aero aids. The kart was 10 seconds a lap faster than the bike. I'm pretty sure the delta hasn't changed.
How fast were Fast Eddie and Wayne at the SuperKart race a coupla months ago at Laguna?

In the old days practicing at Sears they would let Karts out with the bikes...and I got to see first hand that they rail around the corners...passing me on the outside of the Carousel like I was tied to a post...
Like it has been said above...they have the laws of Physics on they side...but you can hang off a kart! :teeth
