If you would like to help with the Hurricane Relief efforts, here is
what you can do.

If you have a trailer and/or room for horses and people to stay, go
to http://www.usef.org/relief/index.php and add your facility.

Also contact the Humane Society of the US and the LA Equine Council
and have them put you on their list. http://www.hsus.org Contact
Gail Vaca to be put on the LA Equine Council's list.
glv190@aol.com Or you can visit their yahoo group,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LAEquineCouncil

UAN is also mobilizing volunteers to help with the relief effort.
Go to their web site to submit your information:
http://ga4.org/uan/events/ears...s.tcl

Other Yahoo! Groups set up for emergency relief:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/...elter
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Evacuate

If you would like to donate money, feed, or supplies, you can
contact a few different organizations. I would contact Gail Vaca
first if you have feed or supplies to donate. She is working
directly with the LA Equine Council as well as Habitat for Horses.
She is coordinating shippments of hay and feed from all over the
country. glv190@aol.com

The Humane Society of the US has a disaster relief fund set up.
https://secure.hsus.org/01/dis..._2005 Your money
will be used for small and large animal rescue. I have donated $25
to their fund myself.

United Animal Nations out of Norther California is also lending a
helping hand with relief efforts. Go here to read the latest press
release: http://www.uan.org/news/090205.html You can donate to
their disaster relief fund here:
https://secure.ga3.org/01/UAN_disaster_relief

The Wild Horse Foundation is also working on relief efforts. I have
not gotten any more news from Ray Field after his initial
announcement. You might want to contact them and see what kind of
help they need.
Ray Field, 979-828-3927, email. grfield@wildhorsefoundation.org,
http://www.wildhorsefoundation.org

I have posted all of this information on
http://www.rescuenetwork.com as well as all of the press releases
and other hurricane related information. Visit The Horse web site
for more news and information as well, http://www.thehorse.com

Also keep in mind the human victims! Please donate clothes, toys,
school supplies, food, blankets, and toiletries to your nearest
donation center. Most local radio and news stations are airing
information on where to drop off donations. If you haven't heard
about donations in your area, check the Red Cross web site for your
local chapter, http://www.redcross.org/where/chapts.asp Also look
for local charities at the Network for the Good web site,
http://www.networkforgood.org/donate

Thank you to everyone that has helped both the humans and the
animals! Every little bit counts! Please forward and cross post
this message to everyone one you know and every group/board you
belong to!

Please help anyway you can...

A rescuer leashes a stray dog in the New Orleans floodwaters on Wednesday.

Grease-stricken: An oily dog wanders the streets of Chalmette, La., as crews clean up the mess created by a ruptured refinery tank. Anything unfortunate enough to be caught in the receding floodwaters got covered with goo

The whole situation breaks my heart and I dont know what it is about the lil guys that always kills me when I see em in less than desireable conditions or hurt, I react more sometimes to animals being hurt than humans.

As much of my paycheck as I can donate on Friday is being split between the humans and the furry friends.

??

Should't we be helping humans first, before we help the pets?

Just a question. I love animals too, but this seems kind of silly.

I dunno, it's seems kinda foolish to be calling the pets 'animals' after seeing the compassion running rampant out there.

Most of the people out there should be able to help themselves or get to help; however, we shouldn't abandon those who depend on us. These pets most certainly need to be helped, less they be forgotten as many have already been abandoned

There was a really sad picture I saw yesterday of a loyal dog laying next to the covered body of it's dead owner. It's food bowl was turned upside down.

Talk about a picture being worth 1000 words :(

fuck the humans, they can ask for help or leave. try asking a dog if he needs help.

Part of an e-mail from a volenteer helicopter pilot to his wife...

"Herbie (the pilot) was saddened to see all the pets on roofs languishing. So many of them were too far gone to save. You couldn't get near the dogs. They there dazed, confused and would snarl/snap at anyone attempting to help them. They also would not drink the water that was left for them. Herb was amazed that he did not see any cats. Cats are amazing creatures/they can survive under the most adverse condiitions as they will in this case. "

From a thread on cycleforums.com .. http://www.cycleforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=187787

This was posted on "The Interdictor" today about strays...

The Belfor Catastrophe Team parked right across the street from us has almost completely cleaned the mess in front of the Pan Am Life Building. Well, except for the homeless people (one of whom seems to have adopted 3 dogs). We're seeing a lot more stray dogs on the street too. So far they look like they're not starving.

In this image provided by the U.S. Airforce, Staff Sgt. Kevin Sanada, left, and Tech. Sgt. Leanna Lightfoot, from the Nevada Air National Guard's 152nd Medical Group, examine a dog affected by Hurricane Katrina,Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans. Evacuees and their pets were brought to the airport for an examination before being taken to their final destination.

I saw a Rottweiler swim by Anne Curry of NBC while she was in a boat, it fucking hurt me so bad!!

So very sad. It would break my heart to see all those guys hurt and confused.

I'm pretty sure I like my dog and cats better than most people so hell yeah, help the pets!

yeah, a good pet is worth more than the average human any day of the week.

--------------

My family has sent some supplies down to this person. My mother knows her from someplace, I figured ya'll might like to read her update on the situation.
People can mail her old dog collars, food bowls, food..anything that you have that you don't need anymore. Or if you can spare the money that would work also.

Hi everyone!
Trying to keep you updated! Cherri and I worked at LSU today and will go
tomorrow! There are about 1000 dogs and I did not count the hundreds of cats
there!
We worked on the big dogs, medicating and checking them out for volunteers
who are watering and feeding! Going to start on grooming and cleaning up dogs
next week! They are fixing us a makeshift grooming area!

This is the deal! They need volunteers~ Vet tech's , dog people! If you
have someone you can stay with in the Baton Rouge area I promise they will put
you to work for a few days! Hotels are full and hard to come by here!

They will not release these dogs until they have had a chance to find
owners! You have to understand this is a mass disaster! thousands of dogs, pets.
There are lots of different agency's here and hard to figure out who is in
charge!

Dina Becnel was staying with us in Denham Springs she went home to New
Orleans and checked on her shelter ( St Charles Parish) Dogs are being dropped of
right and left! They had no dog food and no electricity.. so she pulled out
2, a pom and mix brought them here and we already found foster homes for
them! Bringing more up to my house tomorrow! CASA used Katrina funds and bought
food for the shelter!
We are going in to Mississippi with CAWS Saturday. They have brought us dog
food and getting some stuff for the vets. We had lots of boxes come in today
and it was wonderful! Thank you to All of you who have sent supplies, funds
and cards! We are so grateful and it is so needed!

Please crosspost!

Help the humans. Of course. But while all of America is pouring their hearts out to help people, the pets are forgotten. That's why I posted this thread. I know there are tons of generous people. From here on BARF and all across America. With all the "Help Katrina Victims" posted here in the 'Sink, I didn't see one for the animals.

Besides, would any of your friends, family members or loved ones stand by your rotting corpse for no reason other than being a "friend"?

Loyal to the end and beyond: A dog maintains a vigil near the body of its master in a gas station parking lot in New Orleans.

H ere are some numbers of rescues to contact there:
" I spoke with Lee of the ASPCA and she told me that they have set up an animal staging area in Gonzalez, Louisiana. It is where animals from New Orleans are being brought.

Here's Lee's (of the ASPCA) phone number:

(206) 227-2289

It's hard to reach anyone down there, but that's where Frank and Don are headed.

Here are their phone numbers:

Frank Armstrong (323) 828-8758

Don Graben (323) 217-9167 "

Continental Airlines Offer to Katrina animals ASAP only

If anyone is looking to foster or adopt a Katrina victim, this
information was on the Petfinder forum...contact any of the rescue
groups working in the area

PLEASE NOTE THAT CONTINENTAL IS ONLY OFFERING THIS FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET THESE HOMELESS ANIMALS SHIPPED TO FOSTER HOMES ACROSS THE COUNTRY NOW!

PLEASE CALL Continental Airlines at 1-800-575-3335 TO GET
THE DETAILS AND TO COORDINATE.

The number for animal transport is 800-575-3335. You have to wait through
the announcement and then you will get a live person! Continental IS
providing free transport to the pets of hurricane victums.

Here are some details:

Only offered on large jets - no small commuter planes for the animals safety.
You must have a crate. It must be the appropriate size for the animal.
The shipper must have identification from LA, MS or AL.
If the person is traveling with the pet, it must be in under the seat crate,
she thought this applied to rescue flights from NO, but was not sure.
If the animal is traveling from a non-affected city (like Houston) a health
certificate is required. There are lots of resources for health certs in
these cities.

If the animal is traveling from an affected city (within LA, MS and AL) they
will allow a hand written note from a rescue organization stating that the
animal is healthy enough to travel.

Unfortunately the airport in Biloxi is still not open.
This service will only be available for another 3 to 5 days. They want to
limit this to a couple of weeks at the most - so, time is of the essence.
Call the number above for more info if you need transport
