LEOs easier on motorcycles for speeding?

i don't know if it's luck, coincidence or what, but usually the only time someone on the freeway is going faster than me it's another bike, and i've never been ticketed for speeding.

i see cars getting tickets all the time which i know were going slower than me.

now, i'm sure we all know that a sprotbile is safer exceeding the speed limit than an SUV (much better control, maneuverability, braking/acceleration, etc.), but do cops take this into consideration as well?

or are we just more difficult to see? :confused

i've gotten a warning, where the police car pulled up beside me and announced on the loudspeaker "SLOW DOWN, THE SPEED LIMIT IS 65mph!", then drove off without pulling me over... but that's about it.

riding home last night on 85 I spotted a moto with a radar gun, all traffic was moving at around 75 and I was going slightly faster

I think cuz I was surounded by cages his radar was picking them up and not me

Maybe they make allowences for that?

I have been accused of being harder on bikes, which I do not think is true. I don't have patience for people that are not in control of their vehicle (reckeless) or people without the proper license or insurance.

All things being equal. If I saw 2 vehicles speeding, a bike and a car, going to different directions and both appeared to be going the same speed, I would probably go after the car before I would the bike.

As motorcyclist, we all deal with the same hazards on the road, no matter what we ride or why. If we are on 2 wheels, there is a degree of risk that people in cars and trucks do not have to deal with. I see a kinship there... that's why I waive at other bikes and I give them a bit of leeway when I see fit. ;)

Not really, if he pulls you over, you're getting a ticket. :p

what day is it today MM4L?

(i wish cops would just pull people over for being unsafe, and not focus so much on rules and regulations)

actually the bay area is really great in that respect. maybe it's just because there's so much traffic and so many people speed that cops don't have time to bust people for doing 5 over or running a yellow light or smoking a joint while riding, but either way i definitely appreciate it.

Hmmmm.. today is "suitcase car" day. That is, those little imports that have a big fin on the back that makes them look so silly. ;)

Here's the list for the next few days:
Friday: "Suitcase Car" Day
Saturday: Minivan Day*
Sunday: Spinner Day
Soccer Mom Monday: Cellphone Driver Day

*Usually I would pick a specific color or type, but I need to catch up from taking a 3 day coffee break during the rain last week. :teeth

I love it!!! :laughing
I ran out of those cites before lunch today!
Send me 2 more books! ;)

On the East Coast bikes get away with a lot. I think most cops figure that motorcycles are less harmful to others if speeding, and if they decide to run, more of a pain to catch.

I hate to give motos tickets but it depends on two things:

1. stupid squid riding that may kill themselves or others and make our insurance go up

2. driver attitude when contacted. Things to never say: "Why the fuck you stop me!" "The other cars were going over 90mph" "You must have not had your donut today" "It must be that time of the month!"

Ride safe to live another day!

Will

Police in the UK play "Ticket Snooker". In case you're not familiar with the rules of snooker, here they are:
http://www.billiardworld.com/snooker.html

In "ticket snooker" the officer must first pull over a red car for 1 point. Then they are free to pull over a car of any other color and are awarded points:

Yellow: 2 points
Green: 3 points
Brown: 4 points
Blue: 5 points
Pink: 6 points
Black: 7 points
White: -4 points (foul)
Any other color: 0 points

Then they must pull over another red car (1 point), then they can choose from the other colors again. Repeat.

Pulling over a car of any color other than red when the officer is due for a red is a foul and penalized 4 points.

Since this information became public the number of white cars on the road has increased dramatically :laughing

VERY COOL! That could be really fun, but I would suggest changing up the colors each week, each day or each shift... maybe print a new sheet and distribute it when everyone puts up their ante.

I would keep pink as high value car (since it is so rare) and mix up the rest, including the opener (and foul) color. No fair picking on red cars everyday! :laughing

Bikes are harder to radar. A standard police radar will pick up the largest object.

An example is a friend of mine got pulled over in a old beat up Datsun pick up truck out by the airport and the officer said he clocked him at 120.

Problem was that the truck couldn't do much over 55 it was so old and warn out. What happened? The cop radared the plane taking off behind the truck as he drove by the airport :laughing

I find that being slightly faster than the traffic is safest, since you're more in control of the passing dynamics and you're always coming up on fresh cagers, so they tend to have the attention span to remember you're there while you're next to them.

I really hope the LEOs realize this and take this into account. They seem to, in my case, as I've been at 0 points on my record for quite a few years, despite nearly always being the fastest vehicle in my vicinity.

MM4L, if you pulled me over for lack of regist. and I played real life rocks-papers-scissors and won, would you give me a break?

All hypothetical of course.

So when he writes you a ticket, you'll cut it in half, and then he throws a rock at you?
