Driver going wrong way arrested in fatal I-90 crash
By Dave Birkland
Seattle Times staff reporter
The woman who drove her SUV the wrong way Sunday on Interstate 90 near North Bend, killing a 20-year-old college student in a car coming in the opposite direction, has been arrested and jailed for investigation of vehicular homicide, according to the State Patrol.
Debra J. Acey, 44, of Snoqualmie, the least injured of the three people involved in the crash, was booked into the King County Jail on Monday after her release from Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue.
Erin M. Klotz, 20, of Kennewick, a passenger in a small sedan that collided with Acey's sport-utility vehicle, died at the scene.
The driver of the sedan, Tracey L. Fischer, 20, of Edmonds, suffered severe head injuries. Yesterday, she was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Klotz, a 1999 graduate of Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, was a junior at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, where she was studying the flute, according to her family.
The Patrol said Acey, who was driving west, somehow got onto the eastbound lanes of the interstate, causing several vehicles to swerve to avoid her before she crashed into Fischer's car.
The collision closed the east lanes for several hours.
A sample of Acey's blood taken after the collision is being tested. Monica Hunter, Patrol spokeswoman, said a "blood draw" cannot be requested unless there are indications of intoxication, such as slurred speech or lack of coordination.
Court records show that Acey was arrested for driving while intoxicated Nov. 6, 1987, in northeast King County.
She went through a court-sanctioned deferred-prosecution program that allows charges to be dismissed if a first-time offender successfully completes a program of counseling, classes and monitoring over two to three years.
Records show Acey completed all requirements of the programs, and her case was dismissed in Northeast District Court on July 14, 1990.
The records also show three other driving violations for Acey: speeding in 1999 and again last year, plus a car pool-lane violation in 1998.
