I'm not sure if this is the right section, so mods feel free to move it.
I've been looking for the perfect jacket for the hot hot summer days here in Sacramento, something that will stay cool, but still offer decent crash protection. Now I know it's mostly a trade off between protection and comfort on really hot days, but those of you who choose not to wear leather 100% of the time may be in luck. I think I may have found the jacket that offers some of the best of both worlds.
This is the Cortech HRX jacket. It has an Armor Link-3 mesh torso with leather on the more roadrash prone areas, across the shoulders, down the arms and across the lower back as well as plastic shoulder caps with CE armor underneath and GP style armor in the elbows.
It also has two liners, a waterproof one and a quilted one, which can be used together on chilly days, or just the waterproof one to take the morning chill off. The liners can be removed alltogether for those really hot days to allow for some serious airflow.
Although it hasn't been hot yet, I have used the jacket in all three modes, and it seems like a great solution for those who only own one jacket for all seasons. Now... I have a winter jacket, so I will probably never use the quilted liner, but I can see it being a decent year round jacket, maybe except for when it's super chilly out. I did use it a couple of times without the liners a few weeks ago when it was in the 70's and this thing lets crazy airflow through!
I am 5'9", 190 lbs, so use a size M jacket. It fits super good without the liners in and with just the waterproof liner in, however, it gets a little tight once you put the quilted liner in. This is fine for me though, because like I said earlier, I will probably never use the quilted liner anyway. The sleaves are tight fitting with some stretchy material in the underarms to keep them that way. They don't move around alot, so it seems like the armor will stay in place in the event of a crash.
There are some other cool features, like a zipper that allows you to attach the matching HRX pants, or in my case, my Fieldsheer pants, and a neoprene liner at the back of the neck for comfort.
I'm am looking forward to trying this jacket out in the heat so I can get some real results, but I wanted to do this review early for those that might be looking for a good summer jacket.
Here is the link to newenough, where the price was $179 when I bought it, but now it's $206 instead of $229 everywhere else. This explains the features very well.
