so my g/f's finally coming out to cali to visit this july 4th, and i have never carried a passenger before, have done a few large grocery store runs tho, but thats different obviously.

so im opened to all tips and tricks.....i know the basic, she has to keep her feet on the pegs at all times, she leans where i lean, and look over my shoulder, and do not make any sudden movement EVER :laughing. and of course slower speeds and less lean and proper riding gear all go as common sense. and i'll tell her she cant give me the reach around :angel

but one thing to start it off, i know she has to get off first as i'm keeping the bike up or to park it or whatever. so does she get on after i do then following the same logic? plus id think that w/ her back there its hard for me to whip my leg over the bike w/o giving her a nice roundhouse kick :laughing

I think the best advise I can give you is what I find works really well, and it's really quite simple. Any girl who hasn't ridden on the back is a potential hazard (and some wil lie- one almost had me dumping my bike in the tunnel on I-10 in Santa Monica) and needs to be coached. Before you get on the bike, you tell her "riding is really simple- you just relax and mash your breasts against my back, and move with me", and if she's your girlfriend, that should help her both relax and allow you to pilot properly.

Adjust your suspension and tire pressure accordingly.

Secondly, she needs to keep her arms around your waist and hands preferably hooked together- never have anyone on the back hanging onto the side or rear handle, as they can disappear way too easy like that.

Finally, unless she's into scarrification, when she dismounts, make sure she watches for traffic AND the scarrification device also known as the exhaust cannister, slipon, etc. In LA when riding suddenly became chic you would see lots of women with a 2 in circular spot just above their ankles near the inside of the leg.

That's alot to do, but taking a rider is a serious endeavor- they are trusting you. Enjoy!

yea shes ridden on back of motorcycles before....on other dudes' bikes :x so shes not completely new to the experience.

as far as the suspension/tires, i hate to say but i probably wont get around to it, she'll only be here for a few days, and we arent going to ride THAT much, plus shes 100lbs dripping wet :laughing i just dont have to tools or place to tinker w/ the suspension, i might inflate the tires a lil more.....what psi would u recommend?

and yes, i already told her to bring her timberland hiking boots at the very least.

A. She should either hold onto your waist or reach around and push on the tank when you brake. She should NOT hold onto you tightly, no matter how much the nice feeling is, the weight on your back and arms when you brake will wear you out quickly. My GF almost never lets me feel weight.
B. Your responsibility is to brake and accel completely smoothly, so she does not get jerked back and forth.
C. She gets off after you stop and NOD you head. That means you are ready for her to shift her weight.

Make sure you adjust the suspension and tire pressure. It only takes less than 2 minutes to do them... can't see how you 'won't get around to it'.

I have also set up a rule with my passengers, I tap on their knees a couple of times, it means 'how are you doing back there?", they answer back by tapping a couple of times, to say "Everything is OK!". If for any reason, they need an emergency stop, they should tap on my leg constantly (at any time during the ride, that is.)

don't forget... when your turning to have her look through the turn with you.

make sure she wears thongs, cause there nothing worse for the car drivers to see behind her than granny panties.

You could sit down together and read this web site (http://www.motorcycle-training.f2s.com/pillion.html) - it gives a pretty good idea of what the driver and passenger are supposed to do ...

ok i read it, thats pretty much what i had expected.....tho i doubt she'll be able to get on/off the bike w/o using the pegs, but again like i mentioned, shes 5-3 and barely 100lbs, so i think i can manage that much :laughing thanks guys, we'll def. be safe :) im looking forward to it

Be sure to tell her to squeeze her legs TIGHTLY around you... :)

give yourself at least twice as much room to brake, both because her weight will lessen your braking power and sudden movements are likely to freak her out and/or cause her to smack into you.

encourage her to sit back in the seat a little, assuring her that she will not fall off. i don't know if it's just me, but having a passenger ride my ass makes the whole process of riding more difficult and stressful (plus you can get pushed up against the tank).

the best advice i can give is MAKE SURE SHE'S COMFORTABLE AND FEELS SAFE. don't try to show off with her on the bike (at least not until she's very comfortable riding with you). a tense passenger makes a tense rider. it's distracting and makes everything 10x more difficult. and the more you freak them out the easier it is to freak them out MORE. so just take it easy until she's comfortable riding with you.

nah, i dont plan on doing any "showing off", ive dated her for almost 7 yrs now, so nothing i havent done that she hadnt seen at least once :laughing.....oh well maybe there is one thing, but ive asked her if she wanted to see and she kindly declined :laughing

so i stopped by aftershocks today to see if i can get my suspension adjusted etc. guys were really nice, they took measurements and basically told me the bike is dead on for me, aside from the setup being a lil soft, but since its a commuter they said its perfect. as to the doubling up, the guys said w/ a 100lb passenger, theres really no need to worry, and given my bike suspension's lack of adjustability (only preload in the rear), they said theres really nothing they can do, but assured me that having her in the back would not really cause too much difference.

so i guess im set :)
