Hi guys. I am taking the msf class in newark/hayward the first week of july and have a question about the shoe requirement. I have a pair of timberland boots I wanted to wear. The letter I recieved in the mail stated that the ankle bone should be covered. The boots are a little shy of fully covering the required area. Will this pass or should I go and buy another set of boots. I want to make sure everything goes smoothly. thanks everyone
ps. how is the class in newark/hayward compared to the other classes in the area

Up to you. If they decide they are not good enough you won't be able to take the class. The whole point is to cover and protect the most vulnerable part of the foot area. If they are half boots like mine, no. Try salvation army for a pair of lace up army boots.

You answered your own question.
They must cover the ankle. 'Almost', 'pretty close', and 'damn near do' are all excuses I've heard as I dropped someone out of the class (and kept their $235).

The shoes must cover the ankle bone. If you dont have the correct riding gear then you will be asked to leave. If you do go get new boots then I suggest that you break them in before the class.

You might as well get a set of actual riding boots if you're going to spend the money. Unless you get some at salvation army or somewhere cheap you're going to spend about $100 anyways, so get something motorcycle specific because they'll offer better control and better protection as well.

I'd buy some real motorcycle boots myself. but if you needed some right away and you're short on cash, go buy some ~$20 steel toes from payless. At least one guy from the msf course I took went this route :thumbup

I wouldn't advise steel toe boots. They almost eliminate the 'feel' of the controls that many novices seem to need in the learning process.

Yes. Many students bring their gear to the first classroom session to make sure it is appropriate for the riding sessions. Some places conduct the first riding session on a Friday evening, and the first riding session on Saturday morning. If the student doesn't have the correct gear, this schedule makes it really tough to have the time to purchase gear in time for the first class.

does anyone have any recommendation on some brands or models I should take a look at. Money isnt too much of an issue when it regards safety. Also are there any local shops around here that you guys recommend buying gear from?

motostrano gives a barf discount :teeth They're in redwood city I believe. I've also heard good things about road rider in san jose. Just buy what fits and feels comfortable to you. I have alpinestar supertechs that I got on sale at motostrano. If I could do it over again I might've purchased sidi vertigo's instead. Just head to a shop on try some boots on :thumbup
