I was looking at CBRW's cause mine is like ancient......4x6x24. I was looking at some external ones so I could move it to either Vixens computer or mine.......so the box says it'll write at 40x with USB 2.0 but only at 4x with a 1.1 USB cable.
So, heres my question........is it the cable thats the only difference or do you need to have a USB 2.0 compatible port on your computer???

Gotta have the port... 2.0 ports are backwards compatible, but 1.1 ports will not work at 2.0...

See if your machines support "firewire" or "I-link" That is a much faster BUS "thingiy that transports data" A lot of times you can find one that is PCMCIA "the funky card that goes in the side" That works on all laptops and is interchangible. USB sucks! Another option is to goto surpluscomputers (http://www.surpluscomputers.com) and get 2 refurbed ones for the same price as one.

Just get 2 internals CD-RWs for the same price as you would pay for an external one...

I have this weird problem. When I go out to buy some new gizmo it always seems to be WAY more expensive than I thought and seems to come w/ something attached. I went out and bought a steering damper and it came with a freakin' Gixxer attached to it. Just last week I bought a DVD-CDRW and it came with a Sony Vaio attached.
That damn consulting better pay off - I'm thinking of buying a new couch and I'm terrified of what IT might come with!

Well actually USB 2.0 is actually faster than the current incarnation of IEEE 1394.
IEEE 1394 (ie. FireWire, i.Link, etc.) = 400 Mbit/s
USB 2.0 = 480 Mbit/s
It boils down to application though. Currently 1394 is more prevelant on computers than USB 2.0. However, that may change in the future. Not sure what companies are putting USB 2.0 on computers yet. (USB 1.0 is by far the most prevelant but its slow slow slow 12 Mbit/s)
One thing to consider, if you ever want to do digial video go the 1394 route. That's what you'll find on digital video cameras.

Yes, I believe USB 2.0 cables have a different spec as well. Although they are backwards compatible with USB 1.0.
