View Full Version : another stupid brake bleeding question

I replaced my pads and line today. It took me a lot longer than the 30 minutes I had planned. Long story.

Are you supposed to bleed the line until you see absolutely nothing but fluid? I would lock the bleeding nipple, pump the lever several times, and rebleed and I could not get the tiny little specks to completely disappear. I would always get a few to come out each time I pumped the lever a few times. Is this normal or should I do over? The specks are tiny..smaller than the fine fizz you see from pouring stout.

I drove the bike around the garage and the brake feels good and seems to be working fine though I won't know 100% until I take it up to higher speed tomorrow morning.

Put a ziptie on the lever all night and rebleed it in the morning.

Also, pump the lever slowly when you're bleeding the brakes. Pumping it frantically will break big bubbles into small bubbles and make them much harder to remove.

Guess I'll be re-bleeding today. :(
Thanks for the tip.

If your hose size is a little off, the hose can let air in by the nipple.

go to kragen and buy a vacuum bleeder for $25. just hook it up and keep pumping. i like to pump it up real good before i open the nipple. i crack the nipple and keep pumping til i get clear fluid. then i close the nipple while still pumping. easy. by pumping, i mean pumping the hand-held vacuum bleeder, not the brake lever. works great for cars, motorcycles, whatever.

Get a big, fat syringe (pet supply store or Vet supply). Attach a hose from the syringe nipple to your bleeder nipple.

Top the master off with fluid, tie-wrap the lever to the bar, crack the bleeder nipple and suck fluid out with the syringe. Close the nipple as you're topping out the syringe (it'll want to suck back), squirt the fluid out of the syringe and repeat until you don't see any bubbles. If the lever is still squishy, try to bleed the last of the air out by hand.

Gravity feed is good, though - just check on it periodically.

my brake lever feels firm and is working real well. I think I was just getting paranoid because it was my first try. So far, I've been very happy with the new brake.
