Well, after my little upset with my problem child (Husky) at the last trackday, I took my bike to Peter (dukepilot) before taking her in for a pricey look-see. Peter pulled the valve cover off and found some damage done to valve spring retainer. Here's his exact words:
Hi Dion, this is what we found:
1. The right exhaust valve is too tight... a thinner shim should get it back into adjustment
2. Your right intake valve is missing the shim and its floating around in your engine somewhere. The valve spring retainer will need to be replaced and maybe your cam follower/rocker arm too. The parts shouldn't cost too much but most likely you will have to remove the engine from the frame and the head from the engine to fix it. You will also need a new head gasket.
Talk to Tom to get an idea of the cost for repair. You might also want to check with Dan at Motoxotica in Vacaville. He probably has the parts you need in stock.
Peter
Looks like the shim wasn't seated in correctly and it shot off into engine space.
Folks, this is where the lesson in "saving for emergencies" comes in... because this one is gonna cost me a pretty penny. :( Also, "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it..." is a good rule to live by sometimes.
SO! Since I'm bikeless and Rich is all busted up, your trackday hosts will be sitting this one out. I'm still gonna bring my gear in case somebody is kind enough to let me borrow their bike for a few sessions. I'll also need somebody to step in to help the newbs with sighting laps in the morning if that's not too much to ask. Dean?
See you all this weekend. My Husky just may have the curse. :rsrai

You can borrow the XR650L anytime, Dion.. ANYTIME. Just lemme know, and pick it up from my house. You know where I live. And the bike needs to be ridden.... I only took it out once in 3 weeks.
The only reason why I didn't sign up for sunday, is coz my right toe is hurting, and I dunno if it's gonna get better by sunday. =(

Sorry to hear about the Husky Dion. Damn that bites!
I'll be happy to take the newbs on a siting lap in the morning. I'll try to get there earlier then last time to allow plenty of time to get set up.

Damn, that sucks. How did so much float get in between the rocker and valve to let a shim go? Did a valve stick down in the cylinder or something??
Maybe your bike is thinking
"call me off road only and I'll throw a valve at you...." :teeth Send the bill to CADMV

The Husky is definetely a problem child. However, if we didn't go into it to begin with, it would be still running, very well. :(

why did you have to go into it in the first place?
just to give you an idea of cost, when my 04 valve went it was replaced with 05 valves, guides, stiffer springs and a new piston.
some machining had to be done as well.
total for the repair (parts and labor) was almost $1200.
i wasn't happy about having to spend that much, but I was confident the bike would be reliable
good luck with everything though and hopefully you don't have to spend too much to get everything just right

Minimum I'm going to just fix the problem. Then I want to learn how to do the top end re-build myself.
I'm frustrated because it ran perfect before. :(

I will try to get my helmet cam put back together and get some footage. No promises though, i need to get the bike back together first.
Which brings me to my next question.
what time should i be there and how do i get there? I have only been there once, and that was like 2 years ago. How long does the day run for? What time do we get kicked out?

If you want to test ride my SMC out a few times im cool with that. i have seen you ride so i know it will be in safe hands. It also probably is as heavy as your old XR to the weight shouldn't be an issue....

Not sure how the shim got spit out but it can happen if the shim is not properly seated into the valve spring retainer. This seems to be the most likely cause here. Dion said the bike was running fine prior to the valve adjustment. The valve stem appearted to be in the normal closed postion when we looked at it last night. Hopefully the tip of the valve was not also damaged.
