so i've heard it many ways... what's the "real deal"?

is the state rescinding the license plate from dirt bike MODEL YEAR 04+
-OR-
is the state rescinding the license plate from dirt bike with inintial DATE OF LICENSE 04+

as in...

say i have an 01 XR650R and got a tag on it in 05. will it still be good? will it still be good for the next person if i sell it?

as with most laws it comes down to interpretation and enforcement. I know people that have gotten screwed because of some minor technicality, and i know people that have gotten away with murder (figuratively speaking of course).
Typically, if you already have a plate you will keep it. There are exceptions to that rule but I think your XR is going to be safe to sell with the plate.
They go by the 8th digit in the VIN, model year is irrelevant. I did a lot of research on this a few years back, if your vin is a ‘good’ vin you can fight the good fight and get a light kit and whatnot and get your plate. A few people I know ‘fooled’ the DMV and got a plate (even though they have a ‘bad’ vin), but now that the computers figured out the VIN number in their system they are getting a NastyGram from the DMV saying they need to surrender their plate because their bike is off road only. A lot of plated YZF and WR owners I know are enjoying this cruel twist of fate. I almost bought a WR because the dealer told me they were plateable. Whoops.
I think the digit needs to be a ‘3’ or a ‘C’ but I don’t remember if that was good or bad. Who here has a XR650L or KLX? Whats your vin? (those come with legit plates)

3 and C in the 8th digit is the kiss of death.
