I have ridden most of the California tracks and Big Willow gives the biggest speed thrills for sure. It can be very hard on right side of tires. Don't know what the surface is like these days, but it was rather abrasive after the last repave I saw. 750cc and below feel like they are Weezing (I think the altitude has something to do with that too) at that place (atleast the street type). It really is an amazing track to visit if you have never been there!

I also have a new friend I met that is very interested in going. He's new to the area...well he is in Palo Alto, but sooo not new to the track... and he would like to meet some other riders. :thumbup Sounds like this is gonna be quite a partay!! woohoo!

It's awesome that you guys are going to come down. This'll be a lot of fun. It is starting to fill up, which is good. The weather should be good this time of year. And hopefully gas prices will continue to drop through October (it's down to $2.69 by my house today).

WSIR is unique. It's more of a European flowing kind of track, not stop and go like most tracks over here. This track's all about momentum, so leave your brake pads at home and be ready to haul ass!

From the exit of T2 there is a short straight and then the up hill downhill slow corner and a couple more right after that. Then it is basically fast as hell.

So does that mean you're gonna come play with us Ernie? I need you to tow me around. You know how I hate the fast sweepers. My skirt gets all up in my face. I need a 'seasoned' pro to show me the ropes. ;)

Ian! After ten laps you will be pinned in sixth gear in T8-T9 with your knee on the ground. I am not that fond of fast sweepers, but Willow is like a big sundae. The fast corner that will get you is not T8 or T9 at 135 ( probably topped out SV with luck), it's T1 at 100 mph.

At track days on this track people always crash in turns 3 and 4, the slowest ones on the track. Sometimes some doof on a 1000 will lose the rear in turn 2.

Turn 8 is all mental. Turns 5 and 9 are the tough ones and the important ones.

VroomVroomVroom
10-01-2006, 08:29 PM
hows the pavement out there these days? Last I was there was in (like) 1997 after a repave, was very dark pavement and difficult to see imperfections at speed.

Kurt'sSV
10-02-2006, 09:27 PM
The pavement is a hell of a lot better than Buttonwillow.

I think the pavement is pretty good. 2 bumps entering turn two and a weird gouge in the pavement that you can go underneath or over it about a 1/3 through the turn. Going over it upsets the chassis a little bit, but not too much. There's a good dip coming down the hill just before 4c, but your line should take you around it. There's a small gouge in the pavement just past the crest of turn 6, but your line should take you underneath it. Those are the major spots that come to mind.

The pavement offers a lot of grip.

yes, you would have fun w/a 'busa on this track...there's really not any tight turns, and a long back & front straight ( rumor has it liter bikes can actually get into 6th gear :teeth )
seriously, though, you'd have a lot of fun.

**update on spots, there are 3 left in race, 2 left in sport, 2 left in street**

h2o, sport drinks, and lunch will be provided.

You'll figure it out when you get there, or ask one of the Trackdaz guys to show you around, or Zoran.

Stay tight in 2 and 8 so you're not traveling a further distance than you need to.

Enter 9 wide.

Point and shoot turn 5.

likewise :) little windy for my tastes but from what i hear, it's the norm in WS.

was a good time thanks for putting on a good show :thumbup

big thanks to ian for the spot and just as many to pete for driving and putting up w/ me sleeping through most of the ride to and back. i swear i offered to drive several times! :teeth

this is how i broke down the track (please tell me if i'm completely off base)

T1 (G1 SV650 15/46 gearing). down 1 into 5th brake @ the II cone, late apex.

T2 roll off or slight trail brake going in depending on wind conditions and hug it till 3/4 through the turn, drift out and late apex going WOT out. on the inside of the exit there seems to be some pavement imperfections that'll unsettles the bike a little bit.

T3 roll off after that black patch 1/3 from the outside. brake @ the III cone and down into 4th. apex @ the end of the T3 inside apron then straight shoot into T4

T4, go straight after hitting the apex, there's 2 white reflector pucks on the outside to aim for. exit, out there's a white sponsor board on the outside of T4 to use as a reference to drift out wide to straight shoot the little right. this turn sorta confuses me. i'm almost sure i'm losing probably a second there cause i'm not hard on the gas coming out. should i be?

T5 trail in slightly look towards the apex of T6 then WOT

T6 grab an upshift before going over T6 and WOT through making sure to keep the front weighed as it gets light. sometimes i'll roll off for a split sec before the crest

T7 upshift

T8 i'm not too sure how to take this but i'm topped out in 6th going into it. probably 7/8's throttle through which i'm sure is making me lose a bunch of time. if it weren't windy, it wouldn't be as big a deal

T9 there's a short semi-straight section btwn. T8 and T9 that i use to grab a downshift before tipping into T9. about 2/3 out from the inside till i see the orange cone @ the apex then point towards it while WOT. i top out in 6th a little after the start/finish line.

jadeblue2
10-31-2006, 09:31 AM
textbook perfect...(i knew you had it down fast :D)

T4-not a good place to be hard on the gas until after you get past the corner worker station at the end of the omega, then you're bike starts to straighten up a little & you can get more drive.

T8-topped out is right...the test of never is to keep it pinned as all long as you can to T9 :D (faster guys can answer the finer points on that one)

however, if you getting that much drive going into t8 & the front straight, you could probably run 15/45 gearing...again, something to check about (zoran, mr spencer, j, or ducky would have the answer to that, as well as mr kurt)

Kurt'sSV
10-31-2006, 11:35 AM
Yesterday was really fun. Glad you guys got a taste of the Fastest Road in the West.

Seeing Zoran on Spencer's R6 was awesome, huh? I wish I could ride as smooth as he does.

Edit: Now Spencer denies that was his R6 and Zoran was just pulling my leg. I don't know who to believe. I hate those guys. :laughing

As for gearing, I ran 15/46 until I got down into the low 33's in terms of lap times. Then I was hitting the rev limiter in 6th gear before I got to the brake marker for turn 1 and in turn 8. I run 15/45 now.

Zoran put it best when he said "If you have to roll out of throttle for turn 8 [on an SV], bike has too much power [for you]." Turn 8 is all mental. Once you get used to it, going through there as fast as an SV can go feels slow.

:confused

this is (very roughly) how i take WS. this was done w/ MS Paint and it was hard to get the "pen" tool to work half as well as it does in illustrator

T1 i'm making a later apex than that (i think)

T2 i'm trying to hug the inside till about 3/4 through the turn then drift out wide slightly to square off the exit

T4 the map is semi deceiving IMO since the right hander @ the end of it before dipping into T5 is a bit more pronounced. once i get past the cornerworker station it feels like i *should* be hard on the gas going downhill into T5. right now i'm @ neutral to partial throttle.

http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/images/threads/000/176/806/2800021-ws.gif

i'll think about using a 45r if i decide to go down again. how often are there trackdays down there? is there WSMC raceday practice that anyone w/ a race license can join (similar to CCS)?15/45 was perfect when I was regularly running BOTT MW and 550 Superbike about 5-6 years ago.good to know :cool so you CAN lose the front in T8. i thought it was just a bad feeling on my partSeeing Zoran on Spencer's R6 was awesome, huh? I wish I could ride as smooth as he does.i was embarrassed to be in the same group as him :cry he lapped me a couple times during the morning. i'm sure he wouldn't have minded giving me a tow IF i weren't out there "delivering the mail" @ every corner

I was using 15x41 on my SV (yeah, it was pretty tall). I felt I needed to go one down (42 rear). I was shifting at 9 to 9.5krpm's. My engine is not tuned for "red line" power delivery.

T4 had a big ripple on the inside and was much smoother if you entered wide.

I felt I needed improvement in T9, T1 aswell as bike needed tweaking.

Had a good time at the "fastest road in the West"!

not sure what pace I was running, I was capable of keeping up with some and capable of getting blown away by the 600's, 1000's down the straights, my best session was at the end of the day when I was able to follow the 999 (Duc) for a few laps before loosing touch/sight, there was a 600rr Honda I was able to turn about the same lap times and swapped places for a few laps (almost rear ended him once.... doh!..... luckily checked up successfully)

my bike felt heavy, lacked a good neutral feel fully leaned over, and suffered from wheezing down the straights, but I tried hard and suffered only a few loss of traction moments.... mostly from touching down my foot hard mid turn in T6-T8, T4 was a power slide on the way out mainly due to the bumps,.... that track has a really nice flow to it (maybe too much right side sweeping). I have ridden it on 750's and liked it better with more power down the straights for sure for sure,

I recall there possibly being some faster guy's on SV's that disappeared in front of me too, hard to remember when everything moves so fast on that track,

Whoa..... 41? yikes. you should try adding 4 to that, not 1. The fast guys on SV's down there are doing 28's on 45 tooth sprockets. If you have a motor built-to-the-hilt you might try a 44 in the 28's range.

41 might explain your lack of poo-poo in the straights and heavy steering in the turns..

31's on a trackday pace is blazing! You could easily win races cause you'll drop a sec or two with race pace. And if that's your first time out there then that is just silly.

Dude, your bike's got some serious power. Even in the draft I couldn't catch you until turn 1 when your brakes started working. :)

That's true. In a race, though, you leave yourself open to get stuffed, so going over/inside the rough patch is better.

Uh, not accurate at all? I would go with more of Zoran's assessment. :p I didn't feel like I was doing under '33s on Monday even on my fastests laps. Brant Wiwi (2007 WSMC #1) turned a few 31's on Palmer's number 111 SV out there.
