I read the whole thing, and I agree with you. It was understandable that he didn't see your temporary registration in the window but, once your shit came back clear, he should have let you go on your way. There's not much you can do about it, but I understand your frustration.

If it's any consolation, I've had FAR scarier run-ins with police in 3rd world countries, and it tends to put things into perspective. While our system isn't perfect, it still beats the hell out of most.

He wasn't complaining about being pulled over. He was complaining about being detained and questioned for an hour after his information checked out. According to his post, he was fine with being pulled over initially, and was respectful and cooperative with the officer throughout.

What was unique about his situation is that, because of his federal probation status, he still retained some of his 4th amendment rights (with regards to local and state law enforcement searches), and apparently did not have to consent to a search.

Having exercised my fourth amendment rights here and there, I know exactly how angry and petty some police officers can get when one refuses a consent search. Good cops understand that citizens who have not done anything wrong deserve their privacy.

Understand that there are a couple of camps on BARF:

1. Those that believe that, due to their stressful and demanding jobs, cops can do no wrong, ever. If you have nothing to hide, you should always consent to a search and never complain about being harassed.

2. Those that believe that cops are ruthless, power-hungry pigs who revel in fucking with average joe citizens, and enjoy nothing more than pulling over the innocent to give them a hard time.

They're both wrong, of course, but they still fight like fuck and annoy the hell out of the rest of us who don't see the world in black and white (so to speak).

Cops are human beings doing a job, and there are great ones and shitty ones out there, and every shade of gray in between. Looks like you ran across a shitty one but, in the grand scheme of things, you were just delayed for a while.

I'm not saying illegal detentions are right anywhere in the world but, having been stopped and searched in various remote 3rd world countries, I try to keep what we Americans think of as police harassment in perspective. :p

It depends on the conditions of probation and the search clauses contained there within.

Being out and about at 3:30am (w/o a reason) is enough to raise suspicion and a call to one's Probation Officer which could take some time.
