Well with my recent disappointment with my bike this last weekend for the trackday up at RFR on 9-2 and 9-3 I've decided to sign up for Oct. 7 & 8. I hope to see you all there. I'll have my bike fixed by then and hopefully it will be smooth sailing. Right now I'll be flying solo, I don't know if 1FastF4i will be joining me or not, but I know there will be many other barfers there to chat and hang out with. Anyways, see you all there.

I'm there for the 7th only. For now, I have my friend that's taking me. If anything fails, I'm down to hook up with any willing barfers for transportation help. I will of course cover whatever fees that are reasonable. Thanks

Will be there both days.
Its a penalty for buying the ticket pack..........:cry :laughing
I'm actually very excited since I had to miss the ZZ school with a bent bike.......... :cry

I'm only gonna be there on the 7th. I decided to go with a buddy to RFR on the 9-23 with Keigwins and I don't think I'll be able to afford both days with ZZ. But I'll be there on the 7th for sure.

Oh fuck it, I'm there.
I told the wife I wasn't going to do anymore trackdays this year (already done 11).
Guess I lied again. :)

I am not familiar with everyone here but would like to know who is going out there. I plan on making this my first track day, so it'll be nice to meet some of you and kinda get a feel how it would be like.

rumple,
you're making me work to follow you these days. keep up the great work. also don't commit to NO MORE TRACK DAYS yet. We still have Sears Point in Dec. You have to come for that.

I will be there on the 7th for sure and hopefully the 8th. Wife wants to go to sears point for my birthday, but im not sure about the weather that time of year. I think I would have a hard time on a liter bike in the rain. Hell I have a hard enough time on dry pavement.

I would say alot of the people that go to trackdays are on these boards. Also dont be shy about introducing yourself in the paddocks everyone is cool and will help where they can. At least that is my experience thus far.

Come to Reno Fernly, you learned the track last weekend now lets get those pucks scrapped up some more. This time I wont be stuck on the sidelines and I'll actually be able to ride with everyone.

I'll be up there for a repeat offense at RFR :-). All i can say is that last time it took a week to get the smile off my face and Z2 does an aweosme job. It's a bit of a trek, but that track kicks butt. I hope they have it in the large configuration as they did July 2nd.

Oh...you break my heart, Danc. :x Isn't it fun showing the liter bikes how to get through the turns?
And karayzieho, you just come right back to Fernley with us. With the track fresh in your mind, you should be able to get up to speed sooner.
Were you able to make the BBQ and Movie Night in the paddock last time? Fun time had by all. Expect more Fernley fun in October!

:(... i wish i could join you guys for that weekend, but travelling to Fernley, took quite a hit on the wallet (i think feeding my pit crew was what got me)... and yes, the 250 was just plain awesome at that track (except in the loooooooooooooooooong straight)
But, no worries... I will be seeing you guys in the near future. I have been converted to a strong Z^2 supporter :teeth

Well I waited a bit to long to sign up for the 7th and now it's sold out. I'm going to sign up for Sunday the 8th and hopefully be able to get a Saturday spot as well. I decided not to go with keigwins on the 23rd since this will be my first track day and I dont think my bike will be ready in time. Does anyone know if Z2 opens up the paddocks friday night to be able to come in and camp? Would be really nice to be able to do that instead of forking over however much the hotel room would be. Anyways hope to see you all there.

Aw, I think I just bought the last Novice/B- spot on Saturday this morning. Sorry man! See you Sunday, I'm in for both days again. I'm a glutton for punishment, what can I say?
Don't know yet how I'll be getting up there. I might have a trailer, not sure yet... :confused

Definitely get on the waitlist if you haven't already. Your chances of getting a spot will be very good.
Camping will be available Friday and Saturday evening with a couple of caveats:
1. There are no permanent facilities at the track (yet). If you don't have an RV then you'll have to go into town in the morning for a shower. No electricity either so bring your generator if you want.
2. If you want to camp on Friday evening, make sure you bring a printout of your track day reservation. That Friday is the Street Drags event so the paddock will be busy and noisy 'till well after midnight. You'll have to pay the normal $5 gate fee but won't have to pay the $30 fee for drag racing (unless you want to!).
Hope this helps. Should be another excellent weekend! Looking forward to seeing y'all there. If you have any other questions, feel free to send me an email: d2benj@gmail.com

Cool thanks for the advice. I wouldn't plan to drag at all since going fast in a straight line over and over and over is just boring and stupid (at least on a bike anyways). I might steal my parents RV for the weekend. I also have put myself on the waiting list for saturday. I'll be purchasing my sunday slot in the next few days since my bike is still torn apart in the garage. Bikebandit has been really slow in getting my order to me. I placed the order on the 3rd and still havent gotten my parts. I should be getting them today though and should have the bike back together tonight or tomorrow.

Update: I just spoke to the track management and they will waive the gate fee on Friday night for Z^2 customers wishing to camp in the paddock. Woo hoo! Just tell 'em you're with us and you're good to go.
By the way, I participated in the drags at Fernley once and it was a hoot! (although once was enough).

Of course not. I need something to do that weekend since you're going to be all lovey dubby with the woman. I'm not gonna just sit around bored at home with Rosey Palm and her 5 little friends.

Just 2 more weeks fellas. I'm pretty excited/nervous. It's my first time and can't wait. I still have bunch of things to do. I'm changing my oil the week of. I still need to do the required taping/covering of the bike. I need to check my brakes and see if they're well enough for the track. Drain my coolant and replace with water wetter. It's hard to work on my bike now that I moved back into an apartment. I store my bike at my Aunts house, but it's hard to find time too.
My street tires should be enough (If they're new enough) correct? I shouldn't be looking for racing tires just yet (I don't think).

I was told by a couple of racers that newbs need more traction than advanced riders so we should get race tires. Makes sense. But I'll prolly still be running street tires though. That's what I have on and can't really just throw away money. Maybe my next set will be race tires with tire warmers. Or just track tires. It's kinda embarassing to put race tires to go around the track at 45 mph though. :p Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to flush the coolant (4-5 times). I just had my first track school and I think I'll flush again just to get rid of the green tint. Keigwin's seem pretty good. They're more concerned with safety stuff I think like sticky throttle, chain tension, and tire wear. If your bike looks clean, you shouldn't have any problems.
I'll be there both days. :teeth Track days rock.

I might be wrong, I'm not really sure though, but with race tires I don't know if newbies like us would be able to heat them up enough to get the kind of traction they're designed for. If you have a set of quality street tires like the pilot powers or qualifers or something to that extent I'm sure that you'll be just fine.

I have the Dunlop Qualifiers (fairly new). I think I might have one of the instructors warm up my tires to be safe. I read somewhere that they would be willing to do that. I just want to be safe from the start.
Reality98
09-21-2006, 11:42 PM
I'm sure they would but there's really no need for that. Just take it easy at the start and don't ride over your head. It doesnt matter if your the fastest or slowest guy out there just ride safe and have fun.

Yeah, I'm a conservative rider on the street (nothing too aggressive). So I will definetly start at my own pace and increasingly pick up the pace from there. If they happen to have an extra opening on SUNDAY, I might try to squeeze in if I can. I want to see how SATURDAY turns out first. If not, no big deal. I will just go again in November. :teeth

Just drop your pressures to 30 psi in both tires and let 'er rip. You'll be fine.

Sweet! It's expensive as it is. NEW track suit, back protector, boots, possible helmet (this weekend). Fee for the track day. Over $1k already and I haven't spent money for the extra neccessities. Oh well, its the experience and improving of skills that will make it worth it. I still have my snowboard stuff I need to buy this season:( .

Shit wrong track. I'll be at T-Hill with Keigwin's. :p
Regarding tires, I was also told by other racers the exact same thing. That my pace is more suited for non-race tires. I guess riding isn't an exact science. :)
Snowboarding should help your track riding if you stay away from any broken bones or dislocations. I plan on boarding all winter to build up leg and core strengths. I've spent about $23k since Jan on bike stuff (2 bikes, insu for newb, 3 1/2 sets of tires, gear, parts, tools, service, etc) and been loving every minute of it. :)

Hey i recall meeting you at the wall a while back, you were up there with Sveta (whom has completely fallen of the face of the earth). I saw a guy at Reno about 3 weeks ago with your same bike except it had a 2bros exhaust... it was sweet.
Oh, and i'll be at T-hill on Oct 7th in the B- group

Yes. I remember you as well. You led the b group ride. I had no idea you were such a 250 fanatic. Sveta has had some issues negotiating small animals on the street so she's all track now. She'll be at T-Hill on Oct 8th. I'll be in the same group. I'm looking to see if I can get a track bike before then. If not, I'll be on the 675. It should be a blast. Hope I don't get in anybody's way (newb). It should be a blast.
Are you tracking your 250?

Im a strong advocate for the 2fiddyness :teeth
I have done 3 trackdays on the 250, and i feel i can safely say, i have taken the bike to its current limits, and anything else would require me dropping another $1.5K - 2K to make the bike more suited for the track. (its makes it quite challenging riding a 250 at its limits when the rider is 6'1 and 170 lbs :p )
I will be taking the 636 next and see what i can learn from taking a true track ready bike... and hopefully down the road have a dedicated track bike too.
Dont worry about being slow (for it truly is a relative term), achieve predictability and consistancy, and you will have moved a step ahead of me.

Yup.
I was told to tighten up my lines and not drift out for no apparent reason. I did make a lot of progress on body positioning and throttle. Coming from a 250, I was scared of of the 675's torque but finally got over it at T-Hill.
Is your 250 completely stock? I've dropped about a grand on new tires, fork springs, rear shock, front brake line and pads.
If you can track a stock 250 at your dimensions, you got to be pretty smooth. I started bottoming out the front suspension on the street due to my squidliness before I decide to upgrade.
The 675 will make a fun track bike but I still owe money on it. :p
I'm still tempted to track the 250 before I sell it though. It would be a shame if I never get to. :(

My 250 is bone stock!! except for the nekkidness. in all trackdays i kept scraping pegs, kickstand, etc... so it really pushed me to improve on my body position. I think you are doing a disservice to yourself not taking the 250 out, it was such an awesome feeling passing a group or 600's and even liters through the turns :teeth
I too wonder who things will be taking the 636 out to the track

If you're anything like me, then you will really be weird about getting on the gas mainly due to braking. I had a hard time gauging proper braking distance which impeded my ability to get on the gas. With the 250, you really got to be careful about hard braking. I learned a lot about my brakes on the 675.
I am curious about just going WOT through most of those turns on the 250. Damn...I think I'll get a ride in early tomorrow morning.

Ive done both T-hill and Fernley with the 250. At Fernley, i had to be a little more cautions when and were i was braking/throttle. At T-hill, those turns were such long sweepers, i found myself overtaking much more, i could be be WOT on turns 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9... my pirelli sport demons were melted! :teeth

Track makes me happy. Bikes make me happy. Working for living sucks, so I will have some time to figure out how not to do that and still be able to afford all those bikes and track days.

Dunlop Qualifiers are excellent tires for both the street and the track. Jason Pridmoore uses them on his STAR School bikes while riding agressively, so they should be up to the task.
As for having an instructor warm up the tires, I think that's something you will be able to do on your own. If you are signed up for the Novice school, your first session will be follow the leader sight laps. These laps will be at a relaxed pace and are to get you oriented with the track. In the rest of the sessions, just take it easy for your first lap and you'll do fine. Cold tires only become an issue if you head out agressively right away.
Z2 will go over everything that you need to know in the rider's meeting and then will expand on that in the first classroom session, which takes place right before you head out on track. If you have any additional concerns, you can post them here or ask any of the instructors at the track. You will find them all friendly and more than willing to help you out.
Oh, yeah, and when you put in water wetter, if it seems like you're only putting in a small amount, then you're doing it right. You'll only put in a few caps full. What I would suggest doing is buying a couple of gallons of distilled water, pouring a little pbit out of each one and then putting in the recommended amount of water wetter. Shake up the distilled water jug and then poor it in. This should happen after you have drained the antifreeze and flushed it out a couple of times.

Very well put.
You will find that Z2 puts on a GREAT track day. The instructors are top notch and will help you learn your lines(the track). You need to be the one to warm up your tires and get used to everything on your bike, just use the force :-). After your couple of sight in laps you will find your tires will be warmed up enough for you to start pushing your ability.
The tip about the water wetter is the best way if you don't know exactly how much you need to put in your system. I actually did that just the other weekend when helping a friend on his bike. His bike was a Derby 50 and we had less than great info on how much capacity the cooling system was, so we mixed in a distilled gallon jug and filled from there.

Well I gotta cancle my days for this event. Went with K@TT today up in RFR and on lap 3 of the first open session my engine started making a clacking noise so I gotta tear the entire motor apart and see what is FUBAR'd. I hope you all have fun up there. I know one of these days I'll actually be able to ride for the entire day without any problems but I dont think that it'll be this season. Hopefully by next season I'll have a bike that wont break on me all the time.

I am very close to buying a suit and signing up. I have never done a trackday before though, and the B- group is booked for Saturday. I don't want to hang out in Reno all day so...
...I'm likely one of a million people to have said this, but I think I could start in the B+ group. Is this allowed? I have years of national-level car experience so I know how a track works. I am decent on my bike as well, maybe someone who has ridden with me can vouch (if needed)? I was the guy riding a Tuono Factory with loud pipes and clip-ons. TIA.

You will be allowed to leave your trailers and bikes in the paddock. There won't be any 24-hour security on Saturday night but I'll be there along with some other ZZ staff and at least a couple other participants.
No guarantees, of course, but we haven't had any issues in the past. Can't say the same thing about hotel parking lots.

All I have to say is you all suck. I was really looking forward to going this weekend and I can't since I have my bike in about a million pieces right now. But on the good side I finally know what was wrong with it. The bearings are shot so I have to replace them all. While I'm at it I'm replacing the rings as well so once it's all back together it'll pretty much be a brand new motor. Have fun this weekend and I hope everyone keeps the rubberside down.

You prolly could....but it's better to start off slow and increment. I thought I was hot shit until I realized I was doing everything wrong and still going fast. It would be safer to work on technique at slower speeds. But if you're used to speed, you should be okay.

Good to hear your ready to roll. I know it's been an issue getting all of my stuff done between my pinch bolt on the front axle breaking and some other stuff on a friends bike. Lucky for me the bolt didn't strip and only broke, picked it out. Scuderia was a big help in getting me the bolts that i needed to just replace all 4 of them. Fernley is in the desert. It hardly ever rains there. Last year when Cali was getting the most rain of the year, all you had to do was drive through wet over the hill and you get a bone dry track day. You could even look up at the hills and watch the rain stop as the clouds pulled away from the mountains. They passed overhead with not so much as a drop on the pavement. I'm not worried.

You're totally right! My parents live in Verdi and even there when it does rain it come in and leaves really quick most of the time. Weather is strange up there, but i'm sure we will be great this weekend.

I had a lot of fun. I was the 748s guy in the C group that look like zoo out there:( :laughing . But I actually learned a lot in one of the sessions, a lady instructor was really patient with me and pointed out the markers as we were going past them and what to do. See this was my very first time. I must have missed the session in regaurds to the markers on the track. I went out on the first session and did the follow the leader thing. On my second session, I went to the aftershock stand and Phil did an awesome setting that took almost the whole second session, because he had to take out the rear spring. So I pretty much sat out the second session.
Anyhow, I'm much more aware of what's going to happen next time around. I went to the track alone and felt a little lost out there most of the time, but next time around I will go with someone else to learn with or find someone experienced to guide me throughout the whole day. I was only able to do 2 1/2 sessions of all the sessions that we had. Either way I liked Z2 setup and how the instructors are widely available to teach on each session (even though they may get impatient at times:x :laughing ).

Glad you had a good time but sorry your first track experience was lacking in a couple of areas. Couple of comments for you:
1. Ducati suspensions are apparently quite a bit more difficult to set up than Japanese motorcycles. Sorry you had to miss a full session while Phil was working on your bike. On the bright side, think of how much money you saved by having your suspension set up at a Zoom Zoom event rather than bringing your bike into a shop!
2. Our instructional staff are not only available to help make you a better rider. They can help you or give advice on any aspect of going to trackdays from motorcycle set up, to proper tie-down techniques to camping! We've done it all a million times before. Don't hesitate to ask.
Looking forward to seeing you out again soon.

Phil was awesome and in no way was it Phils fault for taking the whole session. Although mine did take a little extra work. There were 2 bikes ahead of me, so that's why it took most of the session. My very last session, on my first lap my gas light went on and my day came to an end.
For the price that PHIL charged, you can't beat that! My bike was way off on the settings before I brought it to PHIL. When I went out the first time after the change, my bike was a whole different bike. I had to start over again and get used to how quicker it turned. Which was awesome to have. It felt whole lot better.

Yeah, that was the first place I had a near-tankslapper. I ran over them on purpose, trying to straighten out the esses a little more; they're like sandbags with a thin layer of concrete poured over them.

Hey Chris and all ye Z2 guys...
Just a quick thanks for the good weekend, it was brilliant fun.
Special thanks to Lisa and Quinn for their time and patience in fixing my horrid technique (and being wonderful hosts with tasty chocolate chip cookies).
Just a couple comments, though.. the conditions of the track make it less than ideal. Is there any plan to have the back straight cleaned up? The bumpy as hell braking zone made turn 12 feel much more dangerous than it actually would be flattened out.
And.. I think I still owe you guys for Saturday.

Another great day at the track. Thanks to Ed, Chris and the rest of the Z2 staff for a great track day and great advice. I think those pesky right hand turns are going to get easier. :teeth
oh, BTW, do not, I repeat, DO NOT ride up over the curbing in the esses!
Unless of course you LIKE tank slappers. :wow
I did the same. it scared the shat out of me. I hit the first curbing that shot me into the second curbing and then the third.
Also, Thank you Z2 for bumping me up to the A/B+ class. I really got to see how fast you can enter turns by seeing some of the faster riders out there.
It was a awesome day.
