Are all of the road race based mini's 2 strokes?
What 4 stroke road race mini's are out there, if any?
Looking to get my son into mini road racing (WERA) but dont want to deal with the extra added maintenance of the 2 stroke machines.
edit: non-pocket bike minis

ouch
had no idea it was so expensive
yo the maintnance on a 2 stroke really isnt too horrible, and even when it blows or nearly blows up, rebuilding it is fairly easy
oh to answer your questions:
2 strokes:
YSR50
NSR50
Derbi GPR50
and if u r willing to go motard, there a a LOT of options there, and a lot of 4 stroke options too

The NSF 100 is the only four stroke mini that I know of here in the states.

I don't know if it would be competitive in WERA. I was looking over their classes and they have 65cc minis and they race on big tracks. If the kid is big enough I would go with a 17" wheel Metrakit with a bore kit, if they allow big wheels.
So I think you would be pretty much limited to a motard style bike. I think the limit is 125cc four stroke in the 50-65 class. And I am not sure what size wheels they use or allow.

a) There will be 2 WERA Mini’s classes as follows:
Superbike 50
50cc - 65cc 2-stroke machines based on Superbike rules
Up to 125cc 4-stroke machines based on Superbike rules
Formula 80
66cc to 85cc 2-stroke machines based on Formula rules
126cc to 150cc 4-stroke mahcines based on Formula rules
Something that falls in these guidelines.^
Are the 2 stroke mini's finicky with the carburetion?
How often does a top-end rebuild need to be done?
What bike, best bang for the buck?
Reliability?
That NSF100 looks ideal but the price tag is not.

bang for the buck prolly the YSR as u can get a race preped one for around 1500$ i've even seen them closer to $1000... but then again for just another ~800$ u can have a Derbi, which is a by far superior bike. but then again if u choose to spend 2000$, u can get an NSR for that...
dealing with carbs on a 2 smoke i've found way easier than a 4 stroke. keep it stock and your problems will be exponentially smaller than if u go and try to mod it... top end rebuild every year or so, really depends on how much, and how hard u ride it. if its ridden not too hard, i could easily see a top end lasting 2 years.
reliability go with the Derbi or NSR as they are watercooled
yeah that NSF100 is the bomb ass shit, but for $5000 u could buy a NSR50 and swap any motor u want in there and still have $ leftover to buy us all beer

The Phoenix is new here States side, imported from China.
Tbh, I have no experience with this bike or the power of the China 125cc 4-stroke motor. Brad Reynolds can offer more input as well as what can be added for more umph.
First thing with the Phoenix is setting the suspension up and dialing in the motor. Most likely, the sproket combo may need changing to your liking. Also, am unsure how good the tires are. But the good, there are little options for better rubber for the 16" wheels. Altho' the owner of this bike is inquiring with a China contact to in regards to a performance rated tire.
Matt from SMRRC would be a good resource too, to beefing up the 125cc, 4 speed shifter motor. Furthermore, Matt seems excited seeing this bike to finally making it here not only state side, but locally. He is hoping that peeps will find interest in this bike as a 4-stroke mini racer at SMRRC.
Fwiw, Matt built a 125cc 4-stroker within an RS125 roller. His daughter Elena proved the combo to be very worthy within it's thunder class. I can only suggest to pic Matts mind if you plan to buy this bike.

It's awesome that you're interested in getting your child into mini-racing.
The stock ysr, actually even a moded ysr once set up properly is very little maintaince, and they're CHEAP!
However, if you want the most BANG (speed, handling, etc) for your buck, may I suggest the hondaRS 125 to 80 conversion???!! It may be a little more pricey $1800-$3200 depending on the deal you can find, but there is nothing in mini racing that is faster. And reliabilty? .... I have a stock cr80 motor with a stock carb and I haven't had to adjust the carb once nor rebuild the top end or even fuss with the clutch all season!!!
Just my two cents.

My Honda zb50 is a 4 stoke and currently is setup for roadracing with NSR suspension and 12" wheels. Soon it will have its Takegawa 124 +R kit, and Daytona trans and dry clutch. Im very interested to see how it will do agaist a NSF100, i hope someone around here pics one up sometime soon.
its also road legal for street riding.

What are some things to look out for in a used NSR?
Manimal
11-28-2006, 06:11 AM
I will have a 93 NSR up for sale soon........awaiting parts
Brand new upper, wind screen & lower fairings, fairly fresh top-end (2 practice days, 1 race) and a lot of after-market upgrades.............just thought I'd throw this out there. I will officially post after the new year, just in time for SMRRC 2007 season :teeth

Hi- I hope you give SMRRC a try.I went to Buttonwillow last year to watch a WERA race and there were only two minis total racing on the track. The Stockton Motorplex is also is a great place to learn road racing skills,as the track is tighter.
I have a couple of kids that race and hope to have them race in WERA someday, but for minis in nor-cal,Stockton can't be beat.Maybe it'll be different at WERA this year;SMRRC is a sure thing.

The best two options if on a semi budget is either a NSR50 or Metrakit. Both are great and new 04 NSR50's can still be found for 2k. The metrakit is faster, but doesn't carry the Honda name and is a little more up keep. Just my .02:)

Well i went out and picked up a new NSR today. Thanks for all the advice here. I'll search around the section for break in recomendations and so forth. Next will be gear for the kid and throw him on. He's going to shit bricks when he accidentally sees it in the garage.

Okay so HRC's recomendations for break-in state to
- Raise the main jet number by 2 ranks to enrich the mixture during breaking-in the machine (pg.1-6)
Is this for rebuild break-in or new machine break-in or both?
Is this absolutely necessary or can i just richen up the gas/oil mixture?
Wrong Way
11-29-2006, 10:21 PM
I didn't bother with raising the main. I just ran heat cycles; 50 min 10 min 20 etc. I gradualy increased the amont of RPM's after the second heat cycle to around 7 to 8 thousand.
You can run a little extra oil and it shouldn't hurt. Being cold it probably would like a bigger main. I have a couple if you want to borrow them while out at Stockton.

We still need to get him gear. Does anybody have any used kids leathers they want to sell? Myles is 4'11 and 92lbs
