I'm really itching to convert my XR250R to a supermoto and need someone to talk me out of it. :laughing
Seriously, though, is this a good starting point? Is it too underpowered our anything? If I get the wheels and brakes, can I take this to an XR400R, XR650R, or CRFxxx later on?

Dude... 250R is a SICK SuperMoto platform.
If you want to "give it a try" you can always go with a Sportsman set-up for $500 from Motostrano. They have a ton of conversion kits from "giving it a try" to "full on race" type bikes.

PM some of the 150 Mafia guys. They have an Ebay hook up on wheels that could lace up to your stock hubs. Also, a 280 kit on that bike would be siiiick.

Please be sure to consider all the options, such as- if you will spend $1200 to $1500 for wheels, tires, and brakes, then how close to an "already set up" supermoto bike would you be? Yesterday I heard of a CRF250 with everything for well under $3000.
Your XR is a good bike, but only a snack for the CRF/YZF's that are available for not that much more. Consider buying some Sportsman tires, come out to the track 5- 10 times. See if you like what happens, then decide if puting $$$ into the XR is the right thing to do. As you get to know the people there, oportunities will amaze you.

One idea to consider. If you have decided to 'tard the 250, think anout selling it and picking up a plated XR250 (there a ton on CL for cheap.) That way you have an awesome minitard that would be a great city bike too.

CRF250R vs. XR250R are hardly the same thing.
However, I've been talked out of it...
...in favor of getting a bigger pre-built motard!!!
