A race bike with plates is right.
Is the 610 more road worthy?
I have had two of the 450s
The 2006 and a 2007
Only reason I got the 07 was because the DMV asked for the plate back on the 06, which was never guarenteed (but I was little pissed with the way it had been sold to me, needless to say the dealer came good and hooked me up with the 07)
Now they are truly street legal complete with indicators, horn and smog kit.
It all comes off really easily, and once re jetted its a rocket ship.
I had a gasket issue on the 06 which I finally managed to get the dealer to fix under warranty.
Currently the 07 goes out on the street regularly and has 3 trackdays under its belt.
add ons include Akropovic full system, Accerbis bark busters and Michelin Pilot Race soft front/rear
No issues to date other than the permanent grin!

having a 510 for every day riding, am i looking at alot of maintanence. the 610 just seems a little big for me, not motor wise but body wise, i think im wanting something more nimble and aggressive looking.i dont communte further that 10 miles anywhere in my whole town. the only distance riding i will do is to the mountains. also i was thinking the 510 because i do track days now and race afm, and i know im going to want to on my sm as well.

hold on there. you mean they took your 06 plates? the 06 were street legal from day one... the 04 and 05s were the one having issues with keeping plates.. you might have a fighting chance and getthat plate back..

I love my '06 510SMR. My rides are typically 150-175 miles, no problem at all except the last stretch of 20 mins on the freeway makes my skinny butt sore. I change oil and check valves every 1k miles and it takes less than an hour total. No big deal. I had one minor oil leak covered under warranty (partially pinched O ring during assembly). I geared it 1-up front and 2-down rear and freeway is easy (even easier than my 15/39 geared DRZ400SM). With new gearing, it's actually easier to ride on the street; I don't get as many accidental wheelies coming out of switchbacks.
It's more fun to ride than my DRZ, and it does not feel high maintenance to me. The DRZ feels more calm, the SMR feels like it wants lotsa throttle all the time. :D

What Paul said. the '06 were 50 state street legal, not converted dirtbikes. You should not have lost your plate.

I just rode the 610 for the first time yesterday and I don't think you will have to worry about it being nimble and aggressive. It's a handles a 100 times better than a DRZ400.

They took the plate from the 06 (non emision model) I looked into this all ways with calls to DMV, Munroe, Husquvarna, Clean Air dept. There was no chance of getting the plate back any time soon,
Thats why I got the new one with the emission kit
(perhaps the thread should have read 05 and 06 models)

I have an '06 510 and it rips! I have had no problems at all, just pure fun. I was originally looking at the 610, but since I already have a highly modified xr600r motard, I was worried that the Husky 610 would feel too tame to me. I am glad I went with the 510.
Regular maintenance is really important, but it is all easy to do. The 610 does have a less rigorous maintenance schedule and is geared more towards regular street use (ignition key, locking gas cap, etc), but I feel it looses some of the thrill factor in the process. Either one will put a huge smile on your face, so I would look at how they differ and pick the one that seems to best fit your wants/needs.
