I have watched the helmet cam vid 10 times from stockton. I lost the most time in the shicaine leaving the dirt. The left coming in was no problem, but I could not make the next hard right (fast) without losing the line I wanted for a smooth exit. I saw the line others took, but could not carry any speed, and make the same line. I know practice makes perfect, but was looking for any pointers/advice.

Too big to be fast

Big John:

Here's the line that Matt taught me...

Stay to the outside on the straight and turn in later to clip the apex late. The solid white line that leads to the pit area - keep your wheels on that line and ride the solid white line for a bit to quickly turn toward the left apex (facing the pit area). Once you late apex the pit area left hander, it's wide open throttle until you hit the dirt section again.

If you don't late apex both those turns, you will 1) be turning too much, and 2) drift off the track. Many people who don't know that line for the sharp right hander at the end of the straight will drift toward the right and ride off the track. If they don't they will over compensate and having to turn very hard to make the pit area left hander.

I hope this makes sense. Normally I would've done a track walk around at our last trackday, but 80% of the riders showed up late. :mad

I might have that line dialed on video, but still haven't figured out how to post it.

Hey Onebadscot, you can't rush that chicane. What worked best for me was to not try to go to fast into the chicane, late apex the right, that sets you up for a good drive onto the straight. You saw what happened to me when I tried to get out of the dirt and into the chicane to fast, I ended up on the ground. Chicanes are always tricky it's one of those places where going little slower is faster.

ps: can I get a copy of your tape or just the part of me eating pavement. I want to see it on something bigger than your camera.

Ken

One more suggestion, get a faster bike :twofinger

Whoops... wrong turn.

Yeah, it's a wierd turn. You just kinda have to take it slow and use your exit. It's one of those turns where, well... you just have to lean it and pray you don't eat it.

The XR650L is a tough bike to muscle around that thing. Things changed when I got my 450.

I like to come in slow and hold the inside line by the curbing on the right and then just gas it out and do a straight shot onto the straight away. Its a line that wont work on a mini cause you lose to much momentum but on the bigger bikes you can just use the power to get back up to speed.

Last time out I was having a bit of fun and wheelying outta there. I'd come in there in 2nd and the low end grunt would just pop the wheel up as soon as I got back on the gas. Sometimes my line would be a little off and I'd end up jumping the curbing on the left side of the straight. Good times!

try the line 'what's a nice racetrack like you doing in a ghetto like this?' and that soften her up a bit.......

Hey Mondo,

I remember you telling Luke about that same line. You are the guy who passed me on the inside just before the dirt? I was trying to keep the speed up becuse you guys on the faster/lighter bikes where dropping me there bad....But the results where swinging wide on the straight, leaving little time to set up for the next right hander. When I went in slower I could make that line, cliping a little of the paint, but it always cost me on the exit speed. I just keep trying!!

Ken, I was not happy with the raw video from stockton, but I will add your slide out on the next DVD. It looked like your front washed out when your lean angle exceeded the point of no return. Wish I would of got the guy on the new 150, I all most ran over his bike!!....,he lost the front end as well in the turn I'm trying to master.

Does anyone know the guy taking photo's, who looked like he could be my little brother? Bald, red breard, HD camera.??

John

ps If Luke can't make Stockton on 17th, I will have room in my truck. Just PM me.

Yup that was me. It took me a while before I got that line down. At first I was trying to carry a lot of speed coming in and then I would have to make more of a "turn" to get back on to the straight then I liked. So I starting coming in slow almost to a stop and then just power out onto the straight. Seems like the best line for me since I'm not quite to the point where I can power slide the bike through corners. Plus it makes it hard to pass me if I stick to the inside :D

Mondo,

Don't want you to think I was tripping on that pass. Crossed my mind to pass there as well, just got to watch those barrels.

So you are giving up the speed to set up for the exit? Thats what it looked like in the video. You dropped me on that exit an easy 50'. I assumed with the old L that I would have to carry more speed in to get more out. I only got it to work twice, but still would like more exit speed. I'll have my new carb for the 17th, maybe that will help some. Power slide? are we talking gasing the rear around to line up quicker, little rear braking? Or is this a backin move?

John

Ken: almost forgot your get a new bike comment. Damn right I want a faster bike! I hate having any excuse. Hence all my posts regaurding used track bikes? Got a crf450 you want to sell?

I used to try and carry a lot of speed coming into it but then your making it into more of a turn than it has to be. For me it was easiest to come in slow hold the inside and then just power out as soon as I get the bike facing down the straight.

If your really sick you can go from backing it in to power sliding out. But I'm not near that good.
