So I am riding home from work going west bound 580 approaching golf links as I see a newer silver mercedes all over the place of 2 lanes.....I started to notice all cars around us are now gone or way back behind suspect and myself watching. ....
Ok riding and having 2 cell phone in my backpack which is located on my gas tank. I follow until 14th ave and Park exit where the suspect gets off....I pull up to the driver window which was completly down and get next to the driver and ask him "Are you ok to drive?" He said "Of course" leaning over the window and door, words mumbled.....I said I don't think your capable of driving and I am calling the cops.
We go into the nice part of Park area and I stop calling 911....frigging 911 gets me OPD because we are now off the freeway. OPD shows and gets my info.....he sees my vest and wants my name, address and phone number. ???
I know anything could have gone wrong with this possible DUI but he almost hit so many cars parked and moving!
what should I have done besides not following him.....
Follow to his / her home? Then call 911
Get plate and call it in , let the cops try and find him in action of driving?
I need a cell phone in my helmet!!!
Anyways.....my rant!

does anyone ride with a setup using bluetooth right now? Which ear phone or model would be recommended for a helmet?

so if you see someone who you are fairly confident is DUI when in a car with access to a phone, what exactly will calling 911 get you? if an LEO shows up and pulls them over (based on probable cause that they have from their own observations) will you have to do anything else, or do you end up simply reporting it and then having no further responsibilities?

It's always great to have a citizen willing to get involved by giving their name and testifying if needed; however case law is that just an anonymous call of a suspected drunk driver is probable cause enough to make a traffic stop. Here is the most recent (2006) case law on this.

Thx Dragon...I see your familiar with technology of today.
JPM....so true and great info.
For reference I call as much as I can when I see fools taking 2 lanes or almost smashing into a guard rail. I hate seeing those Christmas commercials about families being killed because of a drunk driver!
If needed I will testify too.
CHP has a great approach when I called back in Fremont one night. Suspect was all over 2-3 lanes and doing 80+ I observed him for 6 miles and he was getting closer and closer to crashing. I'm on 911 and dispatch says put your hazards on ....(I'm doing 87mph..lol) I said ok lights are on....she says don't be stardled but an officer is speeding up to you now!!!! Phhhhhh goes by doing I think top top speed and slams breaks pulls suspect over and come to find out the guy was falling asleep!!! No biggie it wasn't a drunk, but maybe I saved his life or someone else that night.....
What ever happened to people getting involved these days? I am old fashioned sort of born in the late 60's, but come on people stand up and fight the crime!

I've had the same thing many times. Sleepy drivers are just a dangerous as drunk drivers.
And so true Baker, people expect the police to do everything. In most cities the is one police officer for each 1,000-2,000 citizens. Most cities actually have less that that. The only way crime can get cleaned up in a neighborhood is if the citizens are willing to get involved and work with the police.
Working in the traffic unit, I get approached a least once a week by people who complain to me about speeding / reckless driving in their neighborhood; a lot of them are really mad that the “Police don't do anything about it". I tell them I will try to work it and ask them if they called and reported it to the traffic complaint line? I have not had one yet say they called. I tell people that we can't try to fix a problem if we don't know there is one.

Being out of Oakland anything goes .....ie speeding, not stopping at stop signs, people crossing streets all the time and when ever wanted to cross (They become 50 points if they jump when locking breaks) LOL
I like Oakland for that because the violent crime is always more important then a small infraction stuff ....(example --Fremont)
JPM I wish ya worked out of Oakland area.....theres one motor officer out in Oakland who has a mustache, older guy, would give his own momma a ticket too (Dayum forgot his name) and he was apart of our support the troops / sac 2 bay ride this year.....man he wanted to bust everyone with the small blinkers or any aftermarket ones on their bikes....the guy was going crazy because he wanted to issue tickets so bad....sarg said NO! lmao
I'll try and find a pic of him.

next time...dont follow and pull up next to them...cuz if i was drunk off my ass and a gangster...i'd have no problem offing a nosy person...
remember the plates, pull over, call...then ride home and relax.....

I tried to call one in the other day on 85N. Some jerkoff on this really cool old milk truck looking thing was driving extremely erratic. Either drunk or just a complete jackass screwing up traffic. Unfortunately, as per usual, I couldn't get through to 911 on my cell...
