I'm going to be getting AT&T DSl later this week. I don't like running their software that comes with their hardware. Do any of you guys run their DSL without the software? Is it possible to run it with no software?

You don't need to use their software at all.
I do use their anti-spyware and anti-virus tools. As for their browser, I have it installed, but I use Firefox.

I'm pretty sure you need their software because you need a client to log you onto their network.
But if you use a router, it can do it for you.

Thats true...forgot about that, as I have a router that logs me in.

I believe if you're a new DSL customer, you need their software to setup your account (username and password). Once established (write down your account info), you can delete their software and configure your DSL router to connect.

I have a router, so I'll try and get on without the software first. If I have a problem I'll install it and try this route.

Your router more then likely won't allow you to do the setup.
I made this mistake, and actually had to call AT&T (sbc at the time) and have them redo the entire setup manually on their end with my username and password, to match the modems mac address.
Trust us, install the software. write down your username and password. THEN uninstall the software, and install the router.
The router does the PPPoE connection itself, but it requires a username and password to do so. You'll have to do that with the software that AT&T provides.

Just call them up and have them register you over the phone, then you can just configure your router after that and you won't need to install any of their software..

You can try that, you'll get the run around first though.

I don't know if this info is still pertinent since the ATT move...

IF you are installing DSL for the first time and do not have access to a username and pasword to get you connected, you will need to call the Customer Self-Install number provided with your kit. Ask them to do a "manual Registration". Let the agent you get on the phone know that A) you wish to NOT install the software, B) you have a router that will perform PPPoE connections and know how to get into the settings and C) you need the REGISTRATION userID and password to get registered.
Otherwise you'll be down the garden path .... I listen to these guys all the time (it's my freekin' JOB) so I know how wierd things can get if you don't spell things out.
This is of course assuming you don't use the URL posted above to register from someplace else. BTW, the simpler version is
https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net << much easier to remember
Also, if you have ANY problems with your dsl, post a synopsis to the SBC Yahoo! forum on broadbandreports.com. there are a few SBC Internet techs that man that forum, and they are GREAT at solving them.

ya my router handles my ATT connection. Most of the time the Modem itself hanldes ur username and password if needed. So it may just be a plug in play without having to use their software. Try using it first before installing their software

yes, i just went through this mess.
unfortunately their software i needed to do the initial sign-up and to give you a password.
but i dont want any of their crapp installed either, so i called customer service, plus i also use my wireless router as an access point.
it was actually pretty painless.
the deal is that once you hook everything up, your DSL modem has a webserver at: http://192.168.0.1/
point your browser there and check out the connection log-in.
when you can access this page, then the customer service can walk you through it.
all you REALY need is the user-name and password, which they will walk you through to create yourself.
My attitude is that if for no technical reason whatsoever they force you to install the software, they better be prepared to have everyone call them up.
why dont they just pre=create those and mail them out in the paper work???

Dont use their CD/software, When I setup peeps on Sbc i use this link, https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net/SBCYahooRegEARWeb .
The modem will store your username/password. If you are using a router/firewall, You will need to login to the modem first at http://192.168.0.1/ then you need to need to change the PPOE location on the modem to the middle option, I think it is PC or router. Basically you turn the modem into a bridge,
Save changes and hook it up to your router/firewall and enter your username and password and you ae all set to go :)

That link is just a user agreement , unless I missed something.
How do I get a username and password?

It worked with internet explorer. What do I do after I get it there? I'm pretty savy when it comes to computers but I don't know where to start in there. I couln't even find a domain name for my router.

I assumed that because you didn't want to use the software, you knew how to configure a router.
What's the big deal with using the software to get you on the net? Once you get it working, you can read the instructions for configuring the router, then you can uninstall the software.
