Yo I wanna mod my xbox so I can have SNES and NES and Genesis and N64 all on it.
What do I need to do?
How much will it cost me?

I've researched it, but haven't done it myself. Most any of the mod chips will do, but they vary in price from as little as $25 to as much as $100. It seems the more expensive ones will give you more options such as switching the chip off on the fly, being able to run FTP, etc.
One cool thing to also look into is the Xbox Media Center software, not the one sold by MS, but the one available in open source. You can create a music and video server with the software. Check out the AV Forum, they have a section dedicated to the X-Box.

Mod chip, harddrive, etc. will end up costing you about $250. Google it, sucka
Since the 360 came out, you can just buy a modded xbox for that price nowadays...

The cost can go up if he adds new face plates, USB ports, etc. But if he just wants a chip and HD, can be done for $100-150.
Here's some screen shots of XMBC software

I already have the xbox (non 360). But I wanted to just get a hard drive and some basic games. Nothing too crazy.
I'll call some mom and pop game shops tomorrow. Prolly some places on CL too..

You didn't get an answer yet?
There are 2 ways to do it
a) with a modded xbox
b) with usb > xbox connector
both will need (initially):
a xbox memory card
a game able to softmod.
You copy the correct files onto the memory card, and start the game, and load the game from memory card, this starts the program to softmod the xbox.
You can google it and find the files, program, and which game.
basically I would recommend the Xenium or Xecuter 3 chips. I've soldered a couple Xenium chips and all where successful. My Xbox is modded, running Xbox Media Center, bad ass little application for it. Getting roms and emu's is nothing I have really ever gotten into, but I got a buddy who does it and he has a shitload of stuff.

I've done both before, and can tell you for the average person, getting chip is more expensive, and more work. The only advantage of a chip, IMO, is the ability to turn mod off/on so you can play xbox live (I'm not sure if its 100% safe yet though).
Both softmod and chip do the same thing, which is allow xbox to run a dashboard, ftp into xbox, play emulators, etc.
A standard xbox HD has about 4gb? after softmod and some basic apps, has more than enough from for GEN/SNES/Neo/etc roms.
I'd help you on it, but all my stuff is in sac.
