View Full Version : Is my windscreen legal?
Was just hearing someone in another thread mention a LEO had told him his smoked windscreen was illegal? I only got the aftermarket screen because it deflects more air than stock, and chose tinted to reduce glare on the gauges. Is it really illegal?

I've heard that it is...gonna check some codes and see...
26701.(d) No person shall sell, offer for sale, or operate any motor
vehicle equipped with red, blue, or amber translucent aftermarket
material in any partitions, windows, windshields, or wind deflectors.
That's the one code I've heard because lights from behind it would appear red/blue/amber. :dunno
There's this one too...probably the one:
26708. (a) (2) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or
material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon
the vehicle which obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view
through the windshield or side windows.

If you are not looking through it, you are fine.

SM motorcycle show had Buels with red-tinted windscreens, which if lit from behind, would appear to be a read light. Registered in Wisconsin, so maybe there's some federal wiggle room?

My wife got pulled over for a tinted screen. The Chippee let her go without a ticket.

I don't think 26708(a) VC applies to a windscren on a f4i. So a smoked windscreen on your ride should not be illegal.
26701(d) does apply to the aftermarket colored windsceens like the iridium (sp?) screens that reflect red and blue to the front.
Thanks for the replies. I can't think of any stocks bikes with anything but clear windscreens, so that probably says something.

In reading the section it clearly states that an element of the "crime" is that the object or material "obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view" through the windshield. I don't know about you, but I've never loooked through the windscreen on my Tuono or any of my other sportbikes. Even tucked in I am looking over the windscreen. Now if I blacked out the windshield on the Road King, I could see that meeting the elements of the section.

Just got a chrome windshield/windscreen (non-translucent). Doubt I can use it. Can anyone confirm this?

Old/dead thread, but came across this on Pashnit.
Was going to send him a PM that he might want to advise "track-use only" if they're not legal. Based on the discussion, I'm not sure what the answer is.

I got pulled over for speeding after getting off the San Mateo bridge and the LEO started picking apart all the stuff on my bike that was not legal. He said that my windscreen was illegal and needed to be changed right away. It's a stock windscreen that I painted black. He let me go with a warning for speeding and the windscreen but I think he just wanted to point out all the stuff wrong on the bike. Why would it matter anyways, I don't look through it and I doubt anyone hear looks behind their windscreen.
</----- That's the windscreen.
