Jason,

It looks like my calendar is open for this.

Will this ride actually go out to Stewarts Point, or just to Geyserville and back to Cordelia? If we get to Geyersville early enough a ride to the coast would be a blast.

Thanks,

Kato
01-17-2007, 03:24 PM
I plan for the group to continue past Geyserville and onto Skaggs springs rd/Stewarts point down to the bridge and back (halfway point) from the coast. Anything beyond the bridge gets nut crunching goaty for most sprotbil riders:(

Did anyone answer your question on the route? I haven't seen a post from Jason. I would GUESS that the route up will be something like Wooden Valley, 121, 128, Knoxville-Berryessa, Pope Canyon Rd, Howell Mountain Road, Silverado Trail, 128 to Geyserville. Since I'm not the ride leader I am just guessing.

Did not see any R1 doing wheelies on our ride.. That would have been a great topper... We had it all..

Lost rider.. Left at Calistoga? Hope you made home Kirsten!
Out of gas.. BTW a Monster S4Rs gets EXACTLY 100 miles to the tank.. Beautiful bike though
Wreck.. You champed that one Ryan! He was up and trying to pull the bike up as I rolled up and I was less that 10 seconds behind.. He made it home with a messed up tail light and no front brake.

And over 200 miles.. That's a ride.

do i need to be extra cautious? i don't want to ride two hours up there if i have to worry about washing out in every turn...

It's stuff the local road authorities have put down to deal with icy roads. The nice thing is it's red, so it's easy to see. It's pretty much where you'd expect it to be - in shaded areas where the road doesn't get warmed by the sun. It's not in every turn, not even in most, but it's there.

Yeah, you'll need to be a bit more cautious., but there's usually a clean path through. I had one little wiggle yesterday, and that was on regular old sand.

Cheers,

Yea, I saw that happen. After the group went back the way we came (back to fairfield), I went back to Skaggs. I saw that rider crash his Yamaha after doing too long of a wheelie on the bridge. He came down hard, speed wobbeled a little, hit part of the guardrail, went down and he and the bike slid about 75 feet. He was fine. All his gear (a one piece leather suit) worked out exactly how it was supposed to.

The damage the bike: Broken front left turn signal, light scratches on left tail end of bike, front left fairing (where the headlights stick out most). Although his sliders were torn up, they worked. The damage the rider: The rider was fine (physically), his kneepuck and shoulder padding were a banged up.

I felt bad for the guy. But the reason he said he didnt stop the wheelie sooner was that he was too happy and excited he was actually doing a wheelie. Everything was fine though, he was in good spirits after, and the bike was rideable.

I learned from a rider up at skaggs that it's not red salt, but rather sand. And there are very few (literally three) spots where there is sand on the roads. There is one major spot about 45 seconds from the bridge where sand is everywhere (even where cars' tire tracks run, so be careful. There are signs posted, "Loose gravel", etc... so you will be warned of any sand.

Enjoy, I had a blast at Skaggs!

hey guys, all in all i had a good time yesterday. glad we were taking it easy in the beginning because i would have gone into those salty area's way too hot and crashed going a lot faster in a worse scenario. just bummed that i had to putt home around berryessa at the end of the day and slow everyone down:-p oh well, not a good day to go fast. i'll have to save it for the track i guess... its weard, every time i put new frame sliders on my bike i get the good fortune of testing them out on the first ride i have on them:( so far R&G is better than vortex;) and to anyone that doesn't have leather- get some, its a good investment:)

anyway, it was great to meet you all. I just need a few parts and i'll be back out there with you soon enough.

no, not a whole lot. the reason i usually go up there is cause it's the fastest way to get to the GOOD roads like stewarts point, tin barn, kings ridge...

i'm usually really chill on skaggs and keep it at about 60 the whole time... every once in a great while, i'll wick it up a bit. not much though.

there's just too many squids on skaggs. too much crashing.
