Hey guys,

Looks like I'm picking up a DRZ400SM this weekend. After all the raving off how much fun they are,..I've given in to the darkside. Wondering what all this fun ppl rant about is all about?!?! A few concerns:

1/ I'm short (5'6), how am I gonna get on this thing??
2/ Can someone help me learn to ride this badboy?
3/ I've heard from the seller that the back tire is toast and I need a new one,....he recommended the Avon (something) b/c the carcass is lighter than those of sportbike tires???

Any info or advice? Thanks in advance guys...

Ann

It's perfect height for you! Chi road one and never had any problems. If you drop it, who cares it's a motard.

They're easy to ride, hump the tank, elbows up and push the bike under you. If you want to learn to ride it, bring it to Stockton next Sunday. You'll get all the tips you need and see some fast mofo's.

I'll let somebody with more tire expertise answer that question.

i can ride it :) and u are taller than me, contiforce SM are good inexpensive tires.

So, is the seat height HIGHER or about the same as,...say...my 996? Should I just throw my leg over and push myself up? Or... pull up next to a curb and then jump on? Sorry,..I know that sounds really stupid, but I'm gonna go test ride the bike on sunday. Don't wanna just dump it in front of the guy.Hahaha :laughing

Get a Gel Seat.It will lower it an inch, and will be a little more comfortable. If your leg inseam is 32" or longer, its no problem with the stock seat height.Congrats, lets do a goat ride soon.

I think 5'6" is plenty tall enough. Val and Chi are both about 5'2" and they can ride it.
To make it easier, put in on the sidestand before getting on.

I just ride mine streetbike style since I don't know how to do dirt or SM style. It works pretty well most of the time.

It's higher than the duc, but as soon as you mount the DRZ, the suspension will sag a bit.

I can tippy toe backwalk the bike and i'm only 5' 6"

don't underestimate the sag on the bike too. seat height may seem a tad high, but these things have a very plush suspension.

congrats on the purchase, these bikes are the most fun you can have with your pants on!

Supermotos require pants?!?! :wtf That's it. I'm not buying it anymore. That was a deal breaker for me... :laughing :cry :laughing J/K!

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I'm really excited to give it a go. I've heard people raving about the fun, and I'm all up for trying something new.

Don't expect me to be getting dirty in the goat trails anytime soon since I AM a bartender and I work weekends. Maybe a brisk 3-4 hour jaunt before work on Sat/Sun or something. But probably not one of Dion's all day rides, just yet.... :)

:thumbup for all the help and advice. Much appreciated!

Ciao!

1. I'm 5'7 on a good day. You're fine, the suspension is bouncy so it's not a big deal.
2. Yes :teeth
3. Tires go quick. Get the Contiforce SM tires.

seat

Congrats on picking one of the funnest bikes ever!Ann,

When you have the cash, a Corbin seat will get you as low and flat as you can get, but just not their stock one - you have to shape it with them (or at least I did). The stock one is super low but too round and passengers slide into you. I went to the factory and had them follow my custom design. We shaped it until it was exactly what I wanted, I rode it around their facility, then wrapped it. It is lower (like by 3-4 inches), flatter, and with better foam, real leather, and a real basepan. I crafted the step up for more take off control and as a bonus for the daring girls who ride on the back, they have more cushion (and more of a pocket) than stock without me having a high seat or losing anything really. I am in SOMA and you are welcome to sit on it.

Pic attached. Almost all black plastic now though.

Their stock DRZ seat is like $300, but besides a day of my time there, it was no extra cash to make it how I wanted.

Sent you a PM about checking it out.

That's a nice thang to know...the seat on my gsxr makes me slide up against the tank to much. Hopefully I'll get a chance to hit up the Corbin factory.

Not to sound like a friggin Corbin ad (or to hijack the thread), but you can adjust your "cradle" if you go to the factory. You can move your self back and even affect your posture by putting more foam in front or back, and flattening the top. I have even gone back and changed mine (900RR). So as long as you don't make them re-cover the thing, you can adjust for free.

I actually used to slide up more (again on teh 900RR). The stock seat was a ramp down into the tank. You need a cradle that goes up slightly before the tank.

Or save the cash and buy some StompGrip.

My bro just picked up a DRZ too and he's shorter than you. Its a nice bike by the way! Your going to have fun. The only thing he's doing is shaving the seat. That will lower it about an inch and a half.
