Check the clutch switch wires on the lever perch. There are 2 wires that need to be connected to the switch leads.
If the wires are connected, the switch may have been damaged installing the lever. Make sure the lever has a tab on it like the stock one.

turns out my clutch cable wasnt adjusted right, didnt have enough free play....im an idiot lol. atleast i think that was my problem. would that cause the bike to only start in neutral?

just took the bike around the block, shifts fine, the only thing that changed was that my friction zone was cut in half so the clutch engages and disengages alot faster now

well i adjusted them to where they should be but they adjuster is only in by about two threads....is that ok? i checked the haynes manual and all it says is to adjust it in for more slack
you can tighten up the cable at the clutch case, so you can get some threads back at the clutch lever.
