I find it odd that I get a notice for an internet explorer upgrade right when Microsoft Vista is coming out. Is the upgrade worth downloading or is it designed to piss you off so you'll get the new operating system?

I'm using IE7. Not sure what the benefit of firefox is. Either I don't look at enough porn, or what I've got does a pretty good job at keeping pop ups and so on to quite the minimum.

I could go on for hours about why IE is terrible from a web designers perspective, the sad fact is most people could care less about how the internet develops.

To put is simply, Internet Explorer is holding back the integration of new web technologies that could drastically improve the web BECAUSE Microsoft is more concerned about developing their own technologies which are fundamentally flawed rather than integrating new and existing standards and technologies.

Because Internet Explorer 6 has stagnated for so long with few updates that are ment really as security fixes and not feature improvements, we are left with broken support for standards that all web browsers should agree upon making the web a usable place for everyone.

In a word, try a new browser as previously mentioned, such as Opera or Firefox. If you are unwilling to take that route then please upgrade to IE 7 as it is definitely a better browser than IE 6 in many ways and at least you are taking a small step torwards improving the web.

I may try firefox.

The whole reason for this thread is I got a notice that "updates are ready to install"- but it doesn't tell you what the updates are or what they will do. I stopped it midstream and found out that it was for IE 7.0 and that it had "better" features, but falls short of explaining why it's better. I upgraded my media player once and it was fucking horrible. Luckily, I was able to go back to the way it was. I've been wary of updates ever since.

So what does firefox have that IE doesn't? How does it perform better? Is it easier to use, more capabilities, etc...

I'm using IE7 at work (but FF at home - of course :teeth) and it's a much better product than IE6.

It seems to have fixed most of the IE6 "features" like security, tabbed browsing, and for my company is easier to work with from a WebDev standpoint.

But if you don't need IE for corp standardizing, use Firefox.

There are a couple ways to look at the crappiness of IE. Web designers, who like browsers to be standards-compliant, don't like it because it largely isn't. On the other hand, users who want to customize their browsers to the nth degree prefer something open-source like Firefox because so many free add-ons have been developed by people who actually give a shit about the end-user experience. Since IE is made of proprietary code, it can only develop at a snail's pace in comparison.

I'll give you an example. I don't like looking at embedded flash advertisements or waiting for script-based crap to load on some of the sites I frequent, so I use 2 free extensions to Firefox, Adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/10/) and NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/), to remove the slow-loading and annoying parts of the pages I use a lot. That's why when I view BARF, it looks like this and takes about 1 second to load: :p

Here's an article dealing with IE's standards-compliance issues: LINKY. (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/08/08/internet-explorer-7-sucks-on-standards/)

With IE, you are using the Harley Davidson of browsers. :p

I don't really like installing a browser program everytime I use a computer. I like to familiarize with whatever is most common, and in this case sadly it's IEeeeee. :wow

I do like IE 6's interface, I don't need tabs to browse multiple sites. I already had tabs for over 10 years, it's called the taskbar. hehe.

Alan is not technical enough to use firefox :toothless

Just be a good boy, do what the computer tells you to do and download what Mr. Gates wants you to have :p

BTW: IE7 works fine on XP...
