Well I bought my first bike today...Its a 1992 Yamaha FZR600R. I bought it because it was priced right, looked good enough and I didnt want to finance a first bike (what if I crash, or dont like). I took it up and down my street a couple of times and I had a blast. I look forward to learning how to ride and having a great summer.

The first bike I practiced on was a Yamaha, my uncle says they're supposed to be good. Even though I'm a newbie myself I have to say you made some very good decisions: buying a standardish bike without oversized engine, and with cash. You wouldn't have happened to be reading BARF before you made the plunge? I just joined recently and watched 2 lame noobers almost make a bad decision:laughing

+1 on the MSF class; also good gear will save your hide (gloves, boots, leathers)! :)

Keep your eyes open in the social gatherings and group rides for sac meetups and rides. We've been trying to do a meet every few weeks or so but I think everyone has been pretty busy the last month or so. Anyways see ya around.
