Hi all,
Just wanted to pass along some info of which I wasn't aware:
When you buy a bike, your old insurance will cover it for only 14 days! (It used to be 30.)
So insure it ASAP. ;)
:D

That depends on the insurer, doesn't it?

Depends upon the insurer.
I have State Farm and they give a 30 day extension.
Best to check with your provider *before* getting your bike.

Most companies offer a 30 day grace period, but some give ya as little as 10 days so definately give them a buzz before buying. :teeth
I assumed no coverage and got it on site. They wanted a fortune, but I cancelled after I got it added to my old policy. Since the initial payment was a couple hundred, I delayed the switch for a couple months.
Turns out, it was a good move. The hard bags got stolen off my bike, including the laptop, cellphone, etc inside. So I filed the claim with the new company, got the check, and cancelled.
Progressive: Expensive as hell, but easy to deal with.
McGraw: cheap, but they'll nickle and dime you on every item of a claim (primered parts instead of factory paint, etc.).

Ummmmm... mine is State Farm too! And they changed from 30 to 14! That's why I posted this. ;)

Ehhh... you know you could fight for factory paint and parts right? That is your rights.

Wow! Nice of them to change the policy and not tell me! But then again, I am anal about this sort of thng and would get the policy by the first business day regardless.
When I worked for them years ago, a lot of people would take advantage of the 30 days. I am guessing State Farm got tired of that.
When I bought my bike last year, it was 30 days. Thanks for the clarification, Yana! Very useful info!

Not many of us head for Safeway and then come home with a new motorcycle...
Simply contact (phone/fax) your agent and let them know the details (make, model, VIN, coverage levels) before you drive it off. You'll get what is called a "Binder", which covers you until you send them a check for the policy. If you are really paranoid, they can fax the Binder to the Dealership so you have it on hand. Be sure to drop off a check- as the thing is only good for a short time.
Short of that- you're going to have to READ your existing policy to know what's up- the horror.
