Hey everyone Joe here. Ok so I passed my MSF class, have my license. Got my first bike a 04 Honda 650 Shadow. Got to ride for three days then rain, rain, rain. Oh well, it should be nice this week.
Have a newbie question ( one of many). Any tips on getting going uphill from a stop? Living in SF it is something I need to get good at. As well as a number of other things, but one thing at a time.

really.
the method I use on really steep stuff is...
downshifting to first gear before you stop, putting your left foot down when you stop, using your right foot on the rear brake to hold your position.
when it's time to go all your right hand has to do is work the throttle, not the front brake also.
you can also go into first at the stop and then switch feet to trasfer the hold onto the rear brake from the front (because you had your right foot down while selecting gears, right?)
slowly release the rear brake as you let the clutch out and roll on the throttle.

Try to find a slightly-steep street that gets very little car traffic.
Congrats & enjoy! :)

Since I had a hard time touching the ground when stopping (i'm a shortie), I had to learn the left foot down - right foot break technique, too. :p.
Good luck and have fun here on :barf
