Nice save is right. Quick thinking for spinning out of control over a boat with no rear rotor control...

At least he recovered and made it back to the ship. Pilot and crew are very lucky.
Strange, I'm not able to find anything the on the FAA's data base about n480KP? Anybody want to buy it?

Any pilots care to explain what could have gone wrong and what degree of screw up this is (if you can tell it is a screw up)?

I have no clue about this stuff and was just wondering if this is a common thing.

I'm no help. I've just started ground school & have a few hours in a simulator. It sure looks like the pilot tried to take off three times before the final attempt.

The stern of the ship was moving up and down, and the rotors on the 'copter were spinning enough to make the thing really light. It looks to me like the ship pretty much dropped out from under the aircraft coming off the crest of a wave. Watch the sea in the background...

yeah, looks that way to me, too. also, i think maybe the top of previous the wave helped it to loft before the deck disappeared below it. but i also have to agree with a previous poster in that the tail rotor didn't appear to be spinning properly. not that i would know what proper spin looks like, it just looked slow to me.

Looks to me like he hooked the skid on that tie-down ring; helicopters don't like that kind of action...

Sorry, I was referring to this incident or accident on the boat. I'm not able to find any information about it?

Here we go. I just found it on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3idQKi5EqM). Looks like one of the tie downs was not removed from the right rear of the helicopter and due to a missed communication between the deck hand and pilot, the pilot tried to take off.

That's what the description sez happened, but I think it was inexperience got 'em into a jam, and luck set 'em free. There's nothing that I can see attached to that chopper when it lifts off and it looks to me like it wasn't the pilot's intention to fly at that moment. The tail rotor looked like it was working fine and only stopped spinning because it hit the deck 3 feet from that guys foot, sending the bird into a spin. The pilot was smart enough to just shut 'er down and fortunate enough to land in the circle without killing somebody.

The YT description says, "Pilot skill and quick thinking saved the day." but I think luck had more to do with the outcome than either.
