Yesterday I was on my way home during lunch hour, riding down Harrison to 9th street. At 9th, the two right lanes can turn right, but the second one can also go straight. I was in the go-straight-or-go-right lane, stopped at the light with my turn signal on. Big ol' factory-original turnsignal. The light turns green, the car to my right makes a right, I go a little deeper into the intersection, following the little dots I'm supposed to follow, start my turn, and hear tires skidding on wet pavement... getting very loud and close. I look to my right and just beyond my elbow is the hood of an out of control taxi. It skidded, a little sideways, to within four inches of my right footpeg.
I was in my leathers with boots and back protector, full waterproofs on top of that, and my full messenger bag. It was dumping rain and I was on the 749. I didn't react at all. I didn't hit the brakes, gas, or change my line. I didn't even squirm. I didn't have time to do much, and I've been working on keeping my inputs at the controls slow and smooth. I almost pulled off at Desmoto to calm down a bit because I was a bit shaken up, but I figured it'd be better to just get home and get off the bike. And drink a beer in the shower.
The thing that bothered me the most was that, just like last time, I was behaving myself and riding normally when a cage came close to killing me. The only thing I can do differently in this case is keep to that curb lane. But my bike is white and blue and grey and black and my helmet and gear match, so I'm brightly visible, and my signal is big and bright and yellow, and the guy either didn't see me or didn't care. And he continued to go straight through other traffic that wanted to make the right turn.
