Dude- spell check is your friend!
Just do it, and you're off the hook for a few years. I don't think you will find much support here for shirking your civic duty...

If you have a financial conflict, I think you can request an extension. Otherwise, if you have moved from the county where you were called for jury duty, then you would not be obligated to serve in your old county. Move! :teeth

Pretty sure that you don't have to serve if it puts you in a financial problem. Have you called and asked?
I have never served :D

Its pretty easy...you will have to go to the court though...once in the courtroom they will ask if anybody has an issue with the particular case...just stand up and make up some bullshit...
I did it once...everyone in the courtroom laughed at me, then the judge called me up to talk to me...I held my ground with my bullshit story and I was on my way!

Since this is California, just pretend that you can't speak English. :toothless

There is a hardship excuse that has several categories. Financial hardship is one of them. You have to show up fill out paperwork and after the judge goes through the whole spiel he will ask for hardship dismissals. Raise your hand and say you work on commission and can't afford to be on the jury. 9 out of 10 times he will let you go.

Don't open the letter and write RETURN TO SENDER and NOT AT THIS ADDRESS on the front. Let the post office return it and don't vote again. They usually pick you through voter registration. :) It will work.;)

in SF you get called every year if you have a driver's license or vote. I have been called every single year for the past 12 years since I moved here. I just saw an article in the paper the other day that says people who get called in SF get called 7x more often than anywhere else in the USA. There are probably a couple reasons why: first, there are a lot of people in SF who don't have drivers licenses and don't vote. Next, there are also a ton of people in SF who suddenly no speak Engrish when it's jury duty time. I tell you what though, it's not fair to have to deal with this every year, they need to get a better system

+1
Read up on the back of your summons statement about 'Hardship'.
Or, do like others I have talked to, and risk it, by not returning (not mailing) your signed slip.......as if you never recieved it.

In Alameda County, serving on a jury, going to the courthouse and wasting half a day to find our you're not needed, or calling the night before to find out that you're not needed all get you out of jury duty for 12 more months.
When I received my last jury summons, I put it off about five months due to a busy work schedule and rescheduled it for a week in early January. My daughter, who is a college student 200 miles south of here in San Luis Obispo, received a jury duty summons near the time when I got mine and put it off for the week after Christmas. I had to go in and waste half a day before being dismissed, but she got out of it with just a phone call.
There are two different things that have worked in the past to get me off of serving on a jury for a long court case, one is to have a vacation trip already planned and paid for during the time when the trial will be happening. The other is a claim of financial hardship.
My company will continue to pay me for up to 10 days of jury duty, then they won't pay after that. A letter certifying that policy was all I needed. Being self employed or commission only should qualify as a financial hardship.
I have a friend who is a judge in a criminal court in Hayward who said that the best bet for getting out of jury duty on a long trial is to get it rescheduled to right in front of a big holiday. Christmas and Thanksgiving work best, but 4th of July would be good this year (pick July 2nd) or even right before Memorial Day or Labor Day.
But it doesn't always work, because the only time I actually served on a jury was the Monday before Thanksgiving for a 3-day trial. But at least it didn't last a long time.

I've had a licence since I was 16, and voted every year since I was 18, I'm 27 now and have never been summoned.....maybe they dont like me.

Last time I went to jury duty in SJ, the judge listened to all the hardship people and didn't excuse any of the salesman who work on commission. Sucks for them, but it was kinda funny seeing him shoot down one after another. The best was one guy who said he couldn't serve because he had to go on a business trip, the judge asked why he let his company schedule him for a business trip if he was supposed to be doing jury duty that week. Well, I thought I'd just get out of jury duty was his reponse.. Wrong Answer!! :)

couple of things.
being non citizen, I used to get summons when I wasn't a citizen, so I just marked that off and was free to go for another year.
don't speak English will work too.
check the box for financial hardship and hope the judge sees your way, you'll lose one day, but most pople I know that have claimed it, were free to go for another year.
Students can reschedule for a later day.

If all else fails act educated. For some reason lawyers don't like smart people on a jury. I have tried to get on juries 4 times and when it gets down to jury selection I keep getting dismissed. The only pattern I see is that they like to keep retired folks and high school drop outs. Let it slip that you have PHD from Yale and you will be out the door before you can say "fry the bastard".

How about you go and do your duty in one of the things that makes this country great? We ALL lose money when sitting on a jury. You're not special.
I've live in CA for 6 years now, and been summoned just about once a year - once in Oakland even. I went every time and the following things did not happen, ever:
- I didn't work.
- I didn't get paid.
- I lost a little bit of money
- The world didn't stop spinning
- I didn't cry about it

i got called to jury duty for the 1st time in my life about 2 months ago. i'm 26 years old, have several vehicles registed at DMV and vote fairly regularly.
i showed up, and they have u fill out this forum that basically asks u questions like "do you have any hate for police officers that would make u impartial in juding a case", and other like questions. be prepaired to back up your answers of course. i basicically filled out the form the worse way i could think of, while still remaining fairly honest. Judge eventually got to me and i basically said i have a Criminal Justice degree and i know a lot about the law and the knowlege has left me with a less than great view of how the law proceeds, threw in some examples of recockulous legal cases and rulings and circumstances and laws - total time at the jury place was 3 hours... talking with the judge lasted about 3 minutes and he excused me
:thumbup
:laughing
i hate jury duty, and in no way to i even remotely feel that it is my civic duty to serve. maybe when i'm old and retired and have nothing better to do - but until then i have motorcycles to build and freeways to collect speeding tickets on !
:laughing

I know what makes this country great, that's why I came here.
All I'm saying that in SF there are enogh people who don't have to work for the living because me and you and many other people pay taxes so they can enjoy their lives and complaint about everything in the world.Let them serve and be a litle bit more productive members of comunity.

Add to the list of reasons not being picked for Jury duty.
During Jury selection it appears if your educated or have experience with any of the major aspects of the case. Your selected out of jury duty by the Defense.
A DUI court trail. I was called late in the selection. Questioned about education I have with Electronics. Prosecution didn't want me in the jury. Bye Bye
Did notice anyone with medical training were also not wanted by the prosecution.
I can only surmise they didn't want people who knew the devices used, aren't infallible.
Another jury selection hanging around all day. Selecting jurors for multiple cases. Jurors called early and not selected for one case had to stay for a selection for a different case. It was Boring as hell.
I finally got called for my first selection late afternoon and last case to find jurors. So when I wasn't selected was allowed to go home.
It was a concealed weapons violation. On behalf of the defense and prosecution the Judge asked the questions. Judge then watched to see the reaction of the attorneys.
Judge asked "Do you have any reason that might interfere with an impartial decision about this case ?"
I answer "Yes the Constitutional 2nd amendment, right to bear arms." I saw the Prosecution shaking head no and defense shaking yes. The judge said your dismissed, thanks.
Heh before collecting all my stuff in the gallery seats, three more jurors were questioned, each said "Oh yeah the second amendment it's great" :laughing

I have lived in CA less than a year and I got summoned - I was like WTF???
Thankfully the case I was scheduled for pleaded before we had to go in - still wasted a few hours, but had time to go get my uniforms for the academy afterwards:teeth
Not that I would ever get on a case anyways :hand
