I bought a new cage... and opted for the new LoJack-EWS (Early Warning System).
I don't know if this available for the bikes yet, but w/ the old lojack; You wake up in the AM and call the cops that your vehicle was stolen.
The new EWS warns the client anytime the vehicle moves w/o authorization.
If the vehicle moves, LoJack will call you, text you and e-mail you to go check your ride. :thumbup
I've had one car stolen from me a few years back and do NOT wanna go thru that again. :| I'd like a fighting chance that who ever steals my car is caught red handed. :thumbup

So do you have to call Lo-Jack and tell them every time you're going to use your car? How would they otherwise know an "authorized" move vs. and unauthorized one?

There a "chip" with the key.
If someone moved it with a master key- w/o the chip: The system goes off.

I remember seeing a episode of Top Gear where Clarkson got somthing like that on his new Ford GT. When he drove to work he got 5 calls on his way to work his car was being stolen and he was the one driving it.

Got it. It's basically the same thing (but different) that a lot of manufacturers are putting in their cars, and BMW in their new bikes then- no chip=no start.

My stereo/alarm shop is sold on LoJack and says that it works very very well. Only thing is, it's expensive. He told me, "they've got a good product, they know it, and they charge for it."

LoJack is cool... but less and less departments are continuing to carry LoJack equipped cars.
I know we no longer have any LoJack equipped vehicles.

Lojack sucks.
It only works if there is a law enforcement vehicle in the area of the stolen car with the equipment installed and working. Lots of agencies have the Lojack equipment but only in a few vehicles. EBRPD has it in their helicopter. The problem is that its random luck if one of the equipped vehicles gets within range of the stolen car.
The GPS based systems like OnStar are sooooo much better. You just call them and tell them your vehicle was stolen. They call the police and tell us exactly where the stolen vehicle is. I know there is limited availability on only a few brands, but that is a great system.
We have 2 Lojack equipped cars and have had them for about 2 years. I know of only 2 Lojack hits we have gotten on them in the 2 years. Lojack in not big in Northern California but its all over in SoCal.

On top of that, I was speaking with an LEO who was driving a Lo-Jack equipped cruiser and the policy in their city was to make a note of where you saw it an that's all. They're getting low conviction rates on drivers of stolen cars and they already have a "no chase" policy for stolen cars (because the drivers don't care if they crash 'em) so pretty much, Lo-Jack wouldn't help unless the car was parked somewhere and they happened to drive by with nothing else to do.

Sac has quite a few Lojack vehicles, and most of the air units have it installed.
My understanding is that if an agency contacts Lojack, and Lojack feels the area has enough vehicles in the area that are Lojack equipped, they will come to the agency and install the tracking equipment free of charge.
I've heard numerous Lojack recoveries, including several occupieds (including a 215 that had the plates removed).
That "note where you saw it" thing is most certainly not in effect here.

You need to be a little better informed before you speak. GPS based systems are easily defeated, put them in a steel box, park in a garage in a city with high rise buildings and they don't work. Don't believe me--try getting a signal on your trusty garmin GPS reciever in those locations.
As for cost, Lojack runs about 600 bucks (including install) and has no other fees.
Also, Lojack guarantees recovery within 24 hrs of you notifying them or you get the price of the system back. Also they do have plans to cover other losses like ins. deductibles. Check out the site (www.lojack.com) or talk to a dealer in the area (bikeworld in sunnyvale is one).
Lo Jack sucks. Check out this system. Blows Lo Jack away.

There are quite a few GPS devices on the market now that constantly monitor location and send that info to a hosting company.....even if the bike were to go into said garage you'd know which one. EDIT: but of course then you have big brother to worry about.

Yeah sure. I speak from experience. We've had Lojack equipment in our cruisers for years. I think we have had two hits in that time and only found one of the cars. In that same time period we have recovered at least a dozen vehicles equiped with On-star within minutes or hours of the vehicle being stolen.

so let me understand this you have a 50% recovery rate for a system that doesn't have as many units out there as on-star. you do know you have to turn the reciever unit on? ;-) I know of at least 2 bikes that have been recovered in the bay area. Lojack (for bikes) has only been here (bay area) for about a year. Also how do you propose to install onstar on my bike? and at what cost?

There is a bike product (or two) that is GPS based... however, if thieves loads your bike into a u-haul; the last known location is still your driveway. :|
