LEO Uniforms?

So...I've been wondering this for quite awhile, but why isn't the motocop uniform more protective? It seems to be a throwback from the days of the mounted riders. I've considered attempting to pursue a career in law enforcement, especially on motorcycles, but that's one thing i just don't think i'd be able to get over...

Any insight on why you guys don't get better protective gear?
